Rebuilt and repainted everything.
My guess is DontBeARikki blew up the trans with some very harsh shifting. There is a dented ball that pops out if you abuse the trans. Once that ball pops out, the gears eat it. I'm looking to work with the trans and have a shop modify it to prevent this. If it doesn't work, then obviously a T56 6 speed would be better.
Thanks for the proof though.

If you guys are SERIOUS (ie no flakers), I'm sure I can get discounted pricing on a few Getrags... but that would mean I'd need SUBSTANTIAL deposits (if not the full cost) down up front, b/c I can't negotiate a deal like that then leave the supplier hanging...

Ernie, I know Carlos, and he runs a VERY reputable shop, including doing a lot of consulting for professional race teams when he himself isn't racing. So it's not a no-name outfit; Carlos is VERY well known in the racing community.
As for the conversion, I spoke w/ Carlos a few days ago, and he told me he'd be posting on the thread shortly w/ pics, details, etc.

PS: Nice for the street? You aren't gonna be swappin entire drivetrains (clutch, tranny, driveshaft, PPF, etc) simply for goin to the track, then swapping it back out will ya? That's a heck of a lot of work...

updates.??? also anyone know where to get the guru dogbox trans? I cannot find a phone number. I know they are in australia but i need to do something here. Stock trannys just wont do it.
#192
turbotommy, I'd think twice about the Guru box. It has a very low torque rating (search through my posts in this and another thread). That's a lot of money for no REAL added benefit. Oh and the shift pattern is reversed too (1st is where 2nd is, and visa versa). That's a real problem for me...
Hey Dave, what route did you go with trannywise? Didja ever end up buying the PPG gearset?
Lastly, I spoke w/ Carlos a few days ago, and he said he'll be posting up pics & info in a few days

thanks ramy, i will consider that. I did not know that. thank you very much. Since i have a 20b, the torque probable will cause a problem. and the shifting is a little odd. lol Lastly, I call and talked to Edwin with PPG because i was going to order that gear set.... He said for some reason he can no longer get them for 6500 which is what they were going for a little while ago. He said he can get them for a cost of 11,000 dollars!! yess $ 11k HOLY .... lol so i changed my mind lol. So im back to square one. Id like to get a gear set or a trans that will fit without doing alot of cutting to the tunnel and changing clutches or splines etcc after just purchasing the exedy triple plate. Not sure what to do here or what my options are

Tommy, the PPG gearset also changes the shifting pattern. And again, even if the gears are strong enough to hold the torque, the tranny case isn't, will flex, and result in stripping of the gears.
I know it's a lot of reading to do, but I also can't re-write EVERYTHING I've written about this subject in the past...so plz read:
1) This thread (all of it)
2) https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/t56-tranny-fd-609461/ (all of it)
3) https://www.rx7club.com/rotary-car-performance-77/fantastic-dogbox-rx7-50419/page7/ from that page on (from my post actually, post #165).
When you put all 3 together, you'll quickly see that the best option price-wise, quality-wise, torque-wise, support-wise, and performance-wise is an MKIV Supra Getrag bolted up to the FD. That's why we're all waiting for Carlos to come out w/ his completely kit which makes installing a Supra tranny completely bolt-on.

The Getrag option is the most cost effective option at the moment so if I was in a hurry to outfit a 20B it would be the logical choice.
#196
The Getrag is a nice way to go, but I consider the above a bit of a strong statement considering that the gear ratios are not quite ideal and support for the Tremecs is vastly greater than that for the Getrag. What makes the Getrag a superior option for a FD owner at this moment is the availability of a bolt-on kit through Carlos and the fact that the Tremecs are still being sold at a high introductory price. That is not to say that it is inherently superior to the new Tremecs (once they settle to their non-introductory price point) in any of the aforementioned categories.
The Getrag option is the most cost effective option at the moment so if I was in a hurry to outfit a 20B it would be the logical choice.

Also, remember this post of mine in response to your post about the Tremec?
So far, I LOVE it. Minus one HUGE thing...it's a 5 speed. That basically says w/ a GOOD close gearset, you're looking at a top speed between 140 - 150 mph if I'm not mistaken. If the 5th is taller, you're losing in the acceleration side...so it's an absolute no-win situation. You MUST give up one to gain the other. A six speed, however, gives you the best of both worlds...(even though I've been anti-6-speed for sooo long).

Well IMO Rob, the Getrag is simply a BETTER solution than a Tremec T-56. Keep in mind I have yet to hear *anyone* who's driven imports not mention how the T-56 shifts like a truck, and isn't made for high rpms. If you're using it in an LS1 or other piston motor conversion where your redline will be 6K - 7K rpm, yea sure it won't matter. But with a rotary (13B or 20B or 4-rotor etc), basically any high-redline application, a T-56 simply isn't the best option functionally.
Also, remember this post of mine in response to your post about the Tremec? So I disagree w/ you; I think the Supra's gears are just fine. Heck, they aren't deemed Kings of the Highway with inferior gear ratios

All good SUBJECTIVE points my friend
Now Rams, we both have heard "through the grape vine" that the new Tremecs do not shift like trucks, but crisp sports car transmissions.
To rebut my own broad comment.... Ideal for WHAT!? With the heap of Ford rear gear possibilities coming down the line perhaps that was an outdated evaluation....
I'm interested to see how much these Getrag conversion kits go for....
So in which ways do you find Getrags more widely supported than the Tremecs exactly?

And a ton of companies make clutches for Supras as well.
OH, and most importantly, one advantage the Getrag offers that the T-56 doesn't (unless you pop in one of the $10,000+ new Viper units) is the tripod assembly, allowing you to maintain the shifter's position in the stock location, regardless of the position of the tranny itself! That's a HUGE plus IMO.

It's taken long for all things to come together, but sometimes life, ... just like sh*t, just "happens" and suddenly priorities change while everything else becomes secondary.
Not forgoten or dismissed, just jugled around.
As Ramy stated:
Mid week next week, my computer geek and I will get together and FINALLY post pics and details of the completed Supra gearbox kits.
Also, I will be posting information and pics on the 3.73 Ring & Pinion gear sets for the FD diff. alomg w/some interesting pics of the latest CLR. endevor.
Next, I will confirm price & availability from a reliable importer I've come across for low milage JDM Supra TT 6 speed gear boxes, (the V 161 JDM version).
Availability will be 2 or 3 units per container. (once every 45 days).
Price will be very attractive.
Though not yet set, it will be substantially bellow market for JDM units.
Last, "Seven Stock 10"
I'd like to invite everyone to come out to "SS 10" on the weekend of September 21 though the 23rd. to Irvine California.
It will be held at Mazda Corporate headquarters and
I will be there, and can answer any questions in person.
Hope to see You all there
All the best,
Carlos
