Stock Alternator on 20b

I'm runnning the stock alt. on a 20b with a Microtech LT12 running 6 MSD coils and the wire off the alt is getting red hot...I mean glowing red. I cleaned up the connection and that didn't help the issue. I'm going to look at the amps being pulled but just curious if others have had to make changes like larger wiring on their 20b. Thanks.

20b alternator puts out less amps than the fd alternator. 90 amps compared to 100 amps. Seems like your having a grounding problem somewhere.

Have any idea what the amp draw should be at an idle? Thanks.

amp draw is system dependent. I would say you might have a voltage regulator problem or something like that.

I agree it is probably a grounding issue. I run an FD alt and it runs the 20B plus e-fans, all the stock interior widgets, and a 600w sound system with no problem.

Thanks. I'll start looking for the issue today. I just wanted to have some confidence that it was a solveable problem and not a "hardware" problem. You know, my taillights and dash lights quit working also but the fuse isn't blown. I wonder now if these 2 issues are related. Thanks again.

My Fc alternator voltage regulator failed about two months ago. Voltage shot up to 18volts. Sometimes it's nice to have a voltage gauge in the car (like stock Fc's do) so you can monitor stuff like that.

Embarrassing, but to put closure to this.... When pulling the old wires off, they were frayed and in real bad shape. I cut the ends off, got a new terminal and put it back together. I ran it and the wires remained cool. Thanks for the help...turns out it was nothing major.
