Pulling apart a 20B.....

Ok guys, once I get my Cermet coated housings and thermal coated rotors, I'll be ready to tear down the motor for porting and rebuild.

So what is all involved in taking the one center iron out? I've searched around a bit but came up with not alot of usefull info....maybe I suck at searching.

Thanks
Joe

well, once you have the front rotor and housing off, you need to seperate the E shaft. You need a puller to do this. I had Scaliwag make me one, but mazda also has their special crack price tool. Then it's bolted on either side so you'll have to remove the real tension bolts as well.

If your carefull the e-shaft can be separated with a hammer and a prybar. This way you don't have to waste money for an expensive puller that you would probably only use once. I would post the link to the forum showing this process but the pics no longer work.

You mean the rear rotor and housing right? Then the rear lobe on the e-shaft must be pulled off correct?

Would you have some pics of this puller in action? Or explain how it pulls the lobe off.

no, front rotor. the rear two rotors are together like a normal 13b. the e shaft is soild between those two rotors. the front rotor is the "added" rotor. I can try and post some pics....

Ok, so how does the e-shaft attach to the rear half then? Is it a taper fit with a key-way?

What size of the bolt that goes into the front e shaft? So basically you just bolt it and pull it out?

I posted a writeup a while back for a 3 rotor rebuild.

This is how to get the lobe off the 20b with basic tools and no mazda tool.

Wow!!! I didn't know it was that easy to pulled the small shaft off. I wrapped a long nose plier with a towel than tap on the bolt on the shaft. It comes out pretty easy. Thanks everybody foe the help.

Wouldn't you risk cracking the ridiculously-expensive-and-hard-to-find intermediate plate with this method?

No. The lobe doesn't even touch the intermediate plate. Take the lobe off and it comes out like a charm when prying it. It's seriously easy.

I know the lobe doesn't touch the plate. You're prying against the surface of the plate with the pry-bar, or it appears so in your pictures.

It would take tremendous force to crack that iron. If you are worried, put a pad on it. A few light whacks won't damage it. It's not aluminum.

Me I used a thin piece of wood in between the pry bar and plate instead of the rags. The wood absorbed a lot of the energy.

So basicly u put pressure on the pry bar and tap on the top bold on the e-shaft?
then it should slide right up?
Or do you need to rotate/twist the pieces in opposit ways to make the e-shaft come's appart?

Pretty much, you may have to tap several times increasing the intensity a bit.

I've only separated my shaft twice but I did not twist it either time.
