Here is a question for the rotary gods.

my 20b is making gobs of power but smokes like a bastard when cold. It has always smoked but it seems to be getting worse. There is 10K on the engine. My understanding is that this is more than likely an oil seal issue. The turbo is brand new. When hot it leaves a 'puff' of smoke when letting off the throtle.

Two part question.

1. does this sound like an oil seal issue.
2. who do you recommend to rebuild. I am not in the country and the rebuild would have to be done to someone I am not that familiar with (KD is not getting my engine back).

My recommendation would be to talk to Rob Golden at Pineapple Racing (www.pineappleracing.com). He rebuilt my 20B. He does excellent work and stands behind it. He is extremely experienced and has done more than one 20B A five year old 12A race engine that he built just came back to his shop, not because it needed to, just because the owner thought it was time having beat on it for 5 seasons. When the engine was opened up, it looked practically new - that's the type of work he does and is known for. IMO he is the best.

Do a rotary engine oil control ring test - high idle up to 4kRPM for 10-29 seconds. Does it smoke a lot? That's oil control rings.

Earl,
When I first got my 20B running it would smoke like crazy when I got off boost. I originally thought it was the stock turbos. But once I went to the single setup (yours is a copy of my original setup) It still smoked when I came off boost. About then is when I twisted the motor and needed the rebuild. When Tito and I looked inside, who ever rebuilt my motor, (I was told Alec Bell, In Australia,) there were all kinds of reused parts and seals in there. The culprit of my smoking issues were found to be the oil and side seals. Since the rebuild all the smoking issues have dissapeared. Hope that helps. It could be the same problem or something totally different.
