Mechanical Power System's 3-Rotor FC

Hello...

Just thought I would share a few pictures of our shop's (Mechanical Power Systems in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada) FC RX7 20B Street/Drag car. The car is powered by a peripheral port 3-rotor 20B that features MPS slide valve throttles, MPS multi-piece hardened chromoly eccentric shaft with centre bearing and splined rear counterweight. All machine work, including fabrication of our very own eccentric shaft was done at our shop. The car is street driven daily, we even use it to make coffee runs.

Hope you guys like it!

That is quite an impressive setup. Expected power output?

Dem ders a doweled motor!

That looks like a LOT of custom work - do you offer pieces to the general public?

r0gu3 - We haven't really dyno'd the car yet, but I can tell you that the car will smoke the 325mm wide BFG Drag Radials through 4th gear on the highway.

RETed - Yes there is somewhere aroung 48 dowels in that engine. We are going to be beginning production of our custom e-shafts very soon. If you see anything you like, we'll be happy to set you up with it, just ask!

Anyways, NICE job! Are those custom made pulleys?

Very nice work in there.

On those exhaust port sleeves-

Did you weld in the upper step into the exhaust sleeve to reflect the exhaust reversion wave away from the port opening?

That is an idea I had many years ago looking at the stock sleeve that is poor for expansion flow- but probably good for something else (I thought anti-reversion).

I also like the square port P-port runner. I just thought of that a couple of months ago, but then last week I thought it might be better to do round and make a vortex discharge.

Did you flow bench the new P-port design into a mock up intake chamber (rotor, housings and rotation) for discharge dynamics or just open on the bench?

KNONFS - Yes those are custom made pullies. Fabricated in house on our own lathe. I don't know what happened to your previous post

BLUE TII - Since I'm just the resident engineering co-op student (aka intern) at MPS, I won't be able to answer your question in as great of detail as you may like, but I'll try my best. Steve, the owner/builder of the RX7, would have to answer for you because I wasn't around the shop when he made the port inserts. What I do know is that he did design an insert which produces a smooth laminar air flow that flows about 300% more then the stock turbulant flowing 20B ports.

NOPR - Running a TEC III, the car idles at roughly 1,000 RPM. In order to stop the plugs from fouling up, we have the idle to fluctuate between about 800 RPM and 1200rpm, the idle just oscillates between that RPM range. The TEC III in addition to the slide-valve throttles really help the car idle a lot lower then most people think an engine like this shoulg. It sounds like this... burrrum burrrum burrrum burrrum. With the current 78mm turbo, we only bring the engine up to 10,000 RPM. With our custom E-shaft, engine speeds of up to 14,000 RPM are possible, but we don't have the turbo nor the fueling to push it that far... yet.

Thanks for the comments guys/gals! Hopefully I'll be able to snap some pictures of the dry sump oiling system, the twin 48mm Turbosmart Pro-Gate Wastegates, the Exedy triple-plate ceramic race clutch (a bit harder to get a picture of), and the custom designed 16,000rpm tachometer face plate that looks like a factory Mazda tachometer.

Was clearencing of the rotors needed with the custom e-shaft to sustain those rpm's? Could you get some vids or audio clips of the engine reving to 10k? That would sound awsome. Lastly an idea what the e-shaft may cost?

Unfortunately we are still running the JDM Turbo II tranny. There will be a JERICO installed for next season .

The current tranny works ok but will not hold up to any full throttle. We've killed 2 tranny's in as many weeks.

Tranny one- under accel. we sheared off the output shaft
Tranny two- under accel. we stripped 3'rd gear
Tranny three- we're taking it easy

Cheers.

What sort of throttle body are you guys running? Just didn't notice one in any of the pics.

It's a slide throttle. It's mounted near the block. Check out their videos on the web page. You can see them in action.

Looks Amazing, Great work.

Cant wait to see it in person. How about bringing her down for the OTTawa Meet 2006, or MTL meet.

I can't say enough about how great that FC looks - you've done fantastic work. I had to go check out your website to learn more.

Then - WTF? A custom-fabbed 2-stroke VW conversion? HOLY ****! That is one of the wickedest things I've ever seen. How? Why? How do you guys feel about how it works? Are you gonna make a product of that kit, or was it just an experimental thing to get some attention for engineering & fabbing skills?

Take it easy,
