Just got my hands on my first 20B, its old but.

It just has a 99 stamped on the housings by the mazda 20B. I can see a heap of fine cracks radiating out from the spark plugs. I haven't had a chance to look in the exhaust ports yet but by those cracks I guess it's already too late. So it's A spec and people say they have weak castings. My wondering is "ís it just the rotor housings that have weak castings or is it the irons too?''.
Ah pics.

Nice pick up!
Don't stress about the casting marks around the spark plug holes, the rear Iron is considered a weak point around the top side dowel on the early 20B's.
It depends on what your planing to do with the motor and how much power you'll be chasing... Will you look at pulling the motor down?

It will be fun which ever direction your looking at heading.

Hey thanks for the replies guys. Haven't got far on the engine yet only stripped off all the accessories. Can't see much through the ports because of the exhaust sleeves.
I'm hearing more and more about not being able to put a 20B in the S4 due to state laws to do with displacement and curb weight. Might be all right N/A. But i'm in a small town might be alright
;P.

Interesting, I thought I was the only 20B S4 owner out there...Welcome to the asylum

Congratz on snagging your 20B. For clarification, you have a Pre-A code engine and one of the earliest ones I know of. It even predates my #352, built on Friday the 13th (4/13/1990). On a whim, I dug up the build sheet for your donor car. Turns out #99 was a two-tone (Paint Code UT) Type-E, built on 3/27/1990. Sadly, no CCS was in your or my donor cars.

I'm not sure what the state laws are like in your area, but as of now, all S4 cars are exempt from emissions testing where I am, due to being 25 years or older. I'm not an expert, but you might be able to use the Evo Defense, stating that an Evo 3 weighs less, has the same 2.0L of displacement, is turbocharged and is officially rated at 276hp as well. Be sure to read up on the laws when you have a chance.
