I was talking to Aermotive about that a few weeks ago, and they said that the problem at that point is that you have issues with the pickup. To support that much power a pump is going to have to suck up a god awful lot of fuel, and during heavy turns, heavy acceleration, etc, the fuel in the tank can slosh around and the small bit thats left it in pick up will be used before the rest of the fuel settles once again.
So pretty much, you need a sump, which lends itself to an external pump.
However, to answer your question, Aermotive says that their A1000 can be mounted in the tank, or the roof, or anywhere else you please. They do recommend that you install a sump and mount it externally and below that sump.
I'm using two Walbro units, because at the peak pressure that I'm going to be having at max boost and WOT, they actually flow MORE then the aermotive unit, and cost substantialy less. Ofcourse, I may have issues with the pickup in the tank, but based on other peoples experiences I'm not too worried about that.

Stock Cosmo is a waste of time.
Even a 255lph Walbro flows more...
Aeromotive make some of the largest FI fuel pumps in the business, but I dunno if a single one can support 1000hp on a rotary - more like 800hp.
The Bosch ones are probably the infamous "Bosch Motorsports" units (part number ends in -044), but they only support up to 500hp on a single fuel pump - I dunno of any larger one, and I doubt they make one that supports 800hp on a single pump.
The only thing that can support huge flow numbers on a single fuel pump is probably the Weldon units; these are used on methanol burning engines and flow gargunatuan amounts of fuel for a single pump - 360gph from Shane Racing.
Side note, if you run twin fuel pumps it's recommended to run separate pick-ups and sumps for each in the fuel tank.

thanks oliver! i have a used cosmo pump w/ 10Kmi that i got from the forum ($125) on its way. i think i read that if you run 2 pumps you would want 2 separate pick up tubes??? hopefully oliver's link will answer some of the questions i have.
oh yeah, also if you want to squeeze a little extra from the cosmo pump it can be run at 14.5v to yeild an output of ~280lph @43psi if i remember correctly. id feel more comfortable running 2 pumps though. also, another tip that was mentioned, is that upgrading the stock power wiring for the pump should yeild extra output as the stock wiring is garbage (especially if you are using 2 pumps). in any case i would be extreemly careful making my own wires that go to the GAS TANK (if you know what i mean ) -heath
