A few questions for you 20B gurus, from a dead 2nd gen

Okay, guys, I have an '89 Vert, am fairly sure the motor's dead, am looking for replacement options, and wanted to ask a ? or 2 bout the 20B. How expensive is it and would it be worth it to put in a daily driver, i.e. MPG and such concerns. Any info is appreciated, thx.

MPG? if you are looking for milage the 20b is not
what you would call a miser. lol
as for expense of doing the job, unless you are very
capable its going to cost lots! $20,000 min
I would find a TII motor and do the motor only swap
which is what i did to my 88 vert, it was really easy and
didnt cost much at all, cost with rebuilding was about
1800.00 canadian and there was not much more than
that, other than the need for a clutch.

RETed's site is pretty accurate, although the EMS info is outdated because this industry changes monthly. You may also want to read these:

In that case, you win.

According to SAE:

Paper covers Rock
Scissors cuts Paper
Rock smashes Scissors
Fire burns MPG

Yeah, I need to introduce info on the new Haltech E11 systems as well as Microtech control (or even the TEC3 system), if people are willing to volunteer information. *grin* I've got an E11 20B project pending right now, so that'll all go up as soon as I get that bitch up and running...

I really need to redo some of the text, as there has been a lot new developments for products to support the swap...

An update would be great, but all of the ECU specs would change a month later, lol. Anyway, I'm sure that everyone would like to see a writeup on the new E11. I hear rumors that the TECI can run 3-rotor split timing with the new software, so maybe you could verify this if the Electromotive guys are willing to talk to you now, hehehe. I can send you info on the new 8-channel Wolf3D 4.0 Plus in another month or two.

What new products to support the swap? I was only aware of the fc3s org engine mounts, but you already have these on your site.

You'll be bucks ahead to buy mine, rather than convert yours.

As for mileage. I generally get 13.5 miles/gal. in daily driving (commuting to work and that sort of thing) and I got 16.5 on a trip to Florida, mostly cruising near the speed limit on I-95. However, the smiles/gal. number is significantly higher than a T-II or stock Vert.

Thanks, Evil, for posting my url.

This is mostly for the ignition systems.&nbsp We're messing with some "new" ignition components that would make the project a lot cheaper.

Thanks for posting the info on the internet! :)

I also think that buying your car would save someone a lot of money, but unfortunately, very few people seem to understand the true cost of such a project. I try to warn people that it takes more than $2K and a weekend with a basic wrench set, but I guess some people must learn the hard way. On the good side, I have seen a lot of engines for cheap on E-bay from those who are trying to get out from under their so-called budget 20B swap, LOL.

I will ask Fred over at Electromotive about the TEC 1 split timing thing since that's the system I run. He's the guru over there.

You and I agree. Now, if we can just convince someone with money.

FWIW, I sympathize with the $2K-and-a-weekend crowd. I used to be like that...when I was 15. Like hope, the desire to acquire cheap thrills springs eternal.

well, so, $10,000 is a reasonable price for doing the swap, if i just keep the engine stock as it is right now? because i can definetly make 10g's this year, but not much more. And since i have an extensive enough tool set, and a couple of mechanic friends, then labor will be fre... er... well, a 30 rack ever 2 days time 10 days...

if you do all of the labor yourself its possible. my swap was about 10k, i did about half of the work in one side of a one car garage, with basic tools. i do have a bigger hammer than you though

Yeah. I just want to get the engine in. I'll worry aobut streetports and bigger turbo's and all that jazz later.
And since i have a 2 car garage, it'll probably be a lot easier. But im not afraid to do just about all of the work myself, except the electrical wiring stuff. Not too keen on that, but, it's got to be done.

Oh yeah, and since the block is a j-spec engine, what are the items usually missing with it?like, i CAN expect the turbo's, and the stock turbo header to be there, right?
