drove 20b today, boy are my ears ringing

i drove the 20b fc down to the muffler shop this morning to have something hooked to the end of the down pipe. of course the stock cosmo downpipe flange is totally different from anything they had. so i drove it home, passed several cops (this is residential), crapped my pants, but they didn't even look my way; 95+db and all. should i leave it open dp? it sounds amazing when it hits about 3krpm (my tach isnt right this is a guess).
the 3 rotor is sooooo smooth, and it can pull from idle in 3rd no problem.

You gotta get us some wav files man (or high quality MP3s)!

Do you smell exhaust inside the car? If so, you ought to at least get a pipe that will extend to the back of the car. Otherwise, leave it alone. Mmm, 20B!

I think that you are going to be disappointed, then. The RB exhausts are extremely quiet (remember, they are made in Kalifornia). I put a RB "street port" full exhaust system on my 1Gen because the racing exhaust was too loud for the street, and now I can hardly tell if the engine is running.

the rb street port system is the best one for a 12a/1st gen though, ive got one in the "shed". one of the goals of my car is to have a sleeper, but it would be a shame not to be able to tell its a 20b

Paul adapted the RB full 3" turbo exhaust to the 20B car, and it was too quiet for my tastes.

I'd run like 4 UltraFLO's to give it some grunt!

3 borla XR-1's!
One after the downpipe and one at each end of the y-pipe.

They don't 'tune' the sound very much at all, and just quiet it WAY down.

Just a question about an NA or SC 20B. Without a turbo, the exhaust will be a lot louder. What type and how many mufflers will I need?

We recently had the exhaust on our Cosmo done, 3" madrel from the factroy dump pipe, at the diff it splits into two 2 1/2" mandrel pipes and into a 2 1/2" straight through Stainless Steel packed muffler on each side, it sounds awesome, nice and throaty, not too loud and if anything, too quiet (well not realy but loud is cool).
Very Happy.

95dB is loud?

Sheesh... my daily driver (429 with open headers - pipes ended under the driver's/passenger's feet) used to peg our 126dB meter on the highway Never got a noise ticket with it either, go figure! I only fixed it because my boss was pissed!

Cops don't care about loud v8's or loud harleys. They generally only care about loud imports and sportbikes.

i went with the rb system cause it was free, and it looks stock. my 20b looks like any other fc, except for being able to see engine in the scoop, you cant tell. it's not even lowered yet (in fact its higher then it used to be)

Dont you guys custom make exhaust systems. Over here you would be fighting to find an off the shelf exhaust, everything is done as a one-off. I run my 3-rotor with 3.5" pipe and two hand made straight through expansion type silencers. Loud but bearable.

i'm using the racing beat turbo back, and it needs a custom downpipe. the muffler shop doesn't have a flange that will fit the 20b downpipe, so i'm having to have one made. they dont even have the tools to do 3.5" crush bends. oh and thanks for the map, i'm using your stock 13bt map and its about 90% there.

Yep, all custom from the turbo(s) back on my car, or it will be shortly I just sold my RB kit.

I also can't find anyone to crush bend, let alone mandrel bend 3.5" pipes. I did find a sight online that sells 3.5" mandrel S pend pipes... I need to find that sight again. I plan on making my system out of cheapo aluminized steel, then taking it to the city and having it made into a stainless steel system, but I have to find someone to mandrel bend big ol pipes... I'm sure Chicago has something...

I find that kinda odd myself. Domestics (musclecars) generally are 100% custom after the header collector.

I think the "off the shelf" phenomenon started in the '80s when people started modding cars with cats and maintaining the cats instead of pitching them. It's kinda easier that way since there are so many different sizes and types of connections that an exhaust shop couldn't stock 'em all.

Heck, most exhaust shops don't bend themselves anymore either - they get pre-bent, pre-flanged, pre-welded systems and just yank off the old and slap on the new. Faster that way.
