Look on the housings down by the "20B" stamping near the oil dip stick. There should be a three digit number stamped into the engine. It may have a letter in front of it. The letter (if present) will be either "A", "B", "C", or "D". If the letter is not "C" or "D" then you can expect to need a rebuild shortly after it is installed and running.

The "C" and "D" series have stronger components than the other series. One can mitigate the problems with non "C" / "D" but the non "C" / "D" engines are engineered with weaker components and more prone to failure than the C/D.

Buy a 2nd gen to do this swap, I think it's alot easier..... Try finding a set on custom "swap" mounts on the internet or the forum (ask around) and get the motor & tranny mounted.... leave the motor stock with the twin turbos, upgrade your fuel pump & clutch, also get an aluminum radiator... If you mount the motor, tranny & all the other basic things then the only thing you need is someone to wire up the EMS and you should be in business... It's a pretty straight foward swap but you need to be mechanically inclined in order to spend less money & for things to go smooth... A 3rd gen body will require custom subframe etc, buy the 2nd gen & call it a day... hope this helps

Banzai Racing also has mounts designed for the FC.

Our brackets are fabricated from laser cut & CNC punched 11GA Steel. They are then press brake formed and TIG welded. Brackets are finished with a Bright Zinc plating to prevent corrosion.

I was told that a 20b could fit in a 2nd generation, but that it would take some adjustments. Again, I'll admit I don't know a whole lot technically speaking. It must look silly that Im posting these stupid questions and crazy ideas Im sure you guys have seen 1000 times, lol.

That being said, I also admit I jumped the gun buying the 20b before even buying a car for it. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure where to put it. I really like my RX8, despite being gutless, and I wonder about dropping the 20b into that. My brother thinks Im crazy to want to throw that engine in a 2nd gen, so Ive also been looking at 3rd gen shells.

So at this point, Im just getting a feel for what to do. I bought the motor, which will arrive any day now, but I have all kinds of time. Ive been driving either an rx7 or an rx8 for the past 15 years now, mostly all stock ... I think I can be patient with this project.

Im not rich or anything. Im just a 33yr old dork with a wife, 4 kids, a dog and a job. But I have gotten lucky lately with the finances and now I want to fulfill a dream, which is.... Ive always wanted a 350hp-ish Rotary powered car.

Thanks for all the tips and advice ... even the critical kind

Put it in whatever shell you want. They are all fun chassis. The FC is probably the easiest one to install it into and the least expensive. There is some good published knowledge on installing it in an FC and some published knowledge for the FD also should you go that route. There have been few RX8 transplants and most done by professional shops charging big $$ so you'll probably have less free support there.

Good luck and read the previously posted links and search as there is lots of good info out there and here.
