Another One

I know, I know, I know that this topic has been exausted completely, but even with searches, I have not found quite what I am looking for. If you can direct me to a good thread, go ahead.

My dad and i are thinking about an FD project, and one of the things that came up was a 20b. Were not looking for something with tons of Hp and tor., just something fun and a little bit different. I was wondering what exaxctly can you keep with a 20 engine and what you MUST have. We don't need all the bells and wistles all at once, i was just wandering what it would take to drop one into a 93. would a stock ecu (20b) run it decently? Can you keep the stock turbo, or does it HAVE TO be changed? If so, Why. Like I said, this is something that just came up, with many other things. Please don't bite my head off with costs and how stupid this question may be, just point me in the right direction. Also, does intercoolers and other nesssesities that won't come with the engine have to be bought new and made just for the 20b conv. or can I find my own nessesties from other vehicles. like I said, please don't bite my head off, just point me in the right direction. I'm young and stupid.

P.S. If this thread is not in the right place, also inform me without mudering me. I'm young and stupid.

Please use the search function, there is a 20B sub-forum in the Rotary Performance forum. Even if you do all the labor yourself, you are still looking at a $20k+ project to do it right. If you aren't looking for a lot of power, I don't see the point of doing it.

why do 3 rotor just to have a contemperary 3 rotor . you can make factory 3 rotor hp on a 2 rotor for prolly less money ! or do you want it just so when you pop the hood people are like , "wow a 3 rotor!"

i searched for 3 hours. to much damn stuff, and none of it was what i was i was looking for. I want advice from someone that has done it themselves, and can tell me what i NEED to know without soliciting me stuff i dont NEED. Ill get what i need, and only bits of what I want. My dad and I are looking over a number of things, but it seems that a 20b would be the most fun. Just modding a 13b would be cool, but not exactly what we are looking for. if you have the 20b, you can add to it over time, and you can say you have a 20b.

(yes, blood, sweat, and hundreds, if not thousands, of frustrating hours trying to kill yourself in getting the damn thing running is fun, in the end)

i already read that thread by the way. the "wow, a 3 rotor" would be cool. and the Potential of that car would be awesome. I know the potential of a 20b is greater than that of a 13b, and that is what i want, potential. It doesn't have to be amazing yet. great things come with time.

Nice family project !
I wish my Dad would have taken interest when I was starting out !
Novelties are nice, but this one will be "COSTLY", especially if You start by taking "Shortcuts", like borrowing cheap parts from other cars.
It will cost You twice at Re-Build time.
For this one, THEIR IS NO EASY, CHEAP WAY ARROUND IT.
Only advice is: Many have come before You. Do some research, Look at what has been done, & at the mistakes others before You have made.
Their is A LOT of IMFORMATIOM here on the forum, and out on the Internet. BUT... figure out Your "Budjet". Otherwise it will only be a dream.
Best of luck.

Let me answer your question with another question:

I was watching an episode of American Choppers, and I have decided to build a custom motorcycle. Tell me what I can keep and what I MUST have.

Haha....Come on guy go easy on him . First of all you need to read all the threads on a 20B swap . Cost wise i think dropping it in a 2nd gen is better . there are mounts made for the 2nd gen already . A 20B swap is a very serious project for anyone to undertake . may be you can go old school and do a carb 13B in a datto(Datson) yummy ...in any case .
Good lucky for your project and count your pennies they go fast in a project ..hehe..

gotta agree with everyone so far. . .if you don't have AT THE VERY LEAST $10K to throw at it right off the bat, you won't be getting of the ground any time soon. if your fd is your daily driver, your gonna be asking friends for a lot of rides. i feel like i got a REALLY CHEAP build going on and here's where i'm at. . .

bought: 87 Turbo II - $300 !
series 5 Turbo II trans - $525
cosmo front clip - $4000
wheels & tires - $1550
gaskets - $40
block off plates - $40
racing beat clutch, flywheel, pressure plate . . . - $600
engine mounts - $330
harness - $375
gilmer gear drive pulleys - $390
need to buy: intercooler and piping - ~$500
AEM EMS and wideband O2 - ~$1500
tein super street suspension - ~$1000
miscellaneous overlooked BS - ~$500 (if i'm lucky)
total : $11650

now i could have gotten cheaper wheels, and you can get cheaper engine management. . .but you'll need something because the stock ecu won't work unless you leave it COMPLETELY stock (power steering, AC, emissions, auto trans, etc) stock turbos will work (why wouldn't they?) i don't NEED suspension, but i want to be able to take it to the track and run circles on people. good luck finding a $300 Turbo II (the hood alone is usually close to $500).

point is, it's no small project no matter how little you try to do. i'm leaving stock ports and turbos and still over $10K. now it's true, there's TONS of potential in there, and that's exactly why i got it. as soon as i get more money, i'm going big street ports, cryo everything, stronger trans and read end, single turbo. . .but that's gonna almost double the project price right there.
