42R TiAL 20B

Hey thought I would post this up here. Just as a reference for the 20B section since not everybody goes into our section and we got to dyno this thing yesterday. This was a simple build nothing extraordinary the main thought being good power at reasonable boost. Car runs a 4202R with a TiAL stainless housing 1.0 A/r. Port work is simple, with just exhaust ports matched to the sleeves, intake cleaned up and a radius put on the closing edge. Minimal timing changes to port timing. Car runs a rerouted 60mm gate through a RB dual tip exhaust for the customer as he wanted quiet around town drivability over all out power. The turbo is louder than the car at full throttle. Car made 500whp@10psi on 93 pump with a nice conservative timing map and low 11's for A/f's We capped it at 7k rpm as we see no need to go higher for what this customer wanted. Turbo comes on nice and quick and keeps pulling, torque is there nice and early and stays nice and flat. I have no doubt had this been a younger customer and we had a full 4" exhaust and open wastegate this car would boost quicker and make a good bit more power without even touching the boost. That said it's nice as it sits the car is very very streetable.

Here is the Dyno for you guys.

Crispeed, gordon, thanks compliments from you two make me warm and fuzzy
I would say yes gordon the exhaust is definitely starting to hurt flow. But overall the car is great around town. I'm sure if we played with the BC a bit more, ran a slightly different spring, or even ran more boost. It would ramp up even sooner. But this car is for a older gentleman and he wanted nice easy power.

TwinGTR I think the tial housings are nice indeed I will be offering more kits with them soon. I think they work well if your comparing T4's to them. I have no experience up top with them yet as I do on the T6's at 36-38psi, so I can't comment there yet. Hopefully when the new build is done on our little purple AE86 (crispeed knows which one ) I can get a good idea as we put one on there to try out.

Did you find the 60mm gate necessary given the lesser flow of the turbine housing compared to a traditional T6? Did you try the V44 first?

I'm building a similar set up with a BW S400 turbo with 75mm compressor and 1.10 A/R exhaust housing. I'd be happy with similar results.

Any predictions?

Looks pretty clean. Pretty nice flat torque curve

Is he missing the ABS heat shield? Just curious...

Wow, can't believe I missed this thread until now. I saw this car in person when it was at A-spec. Sean's manifold created an instant tent in my pants! 3 rotors sound sooo nice... I bet that car is a blast to drive. Funny that you mention that the turbo is louder than the car. My 500r antisurge housing sound also overpowers my RB exhaust.

Sean,

How far did you move the motor back for this build?
What systems/parts did you have to modify to get it to fit in there properly?

Looks great!

Thanks,
John

Didn't move the motor back at all. Subframe was the main mod, shorten the LIM, and move some harness fuse blocks those were the main things. Nothing more than usual.

Thank you sir, We've always had good results with the microtechs we've tuned, they aren't the be all end all, but they do well for a good price.

sounds like a really interesting build. i like to see stuff like this where the owners build for their enjoyment and not bragging rights. i mean, there's a place for numbers in the world, but these days i think i'm getting more impressed with deliberate restraint.

great work, to Sean and the A-Spec crew! you should be proud.

Like I've said before, there are alot of 20b projects but not many on the road. Congrats for getting it on the road. 500 whp at 10psi is pretty impressive. I like the room you have in front of the turbo. I don't know, gmonsen, I'm kind of addicted to HP. There is something about breaking the tires loose at 50-60 mph that is pretty cool. However, when I track my car, I turn off the boost controller and run 6 psi on the WG spring.
Anyway, great job!
