No, no, and it depends. The engine can be had for $4k or less.

no, go ahead and remove your remove your entire firewall and it will fit perfectly be completely street legal!

first of all, think about what you just said there? does that make any sense? if you remove the firewall you'll be sitting in the engine bay... just about everything is street illegal in ca... would a car without a firewall be street legal?

Actually, I was curious about the CA legality of a 3-rotor. Mariah sold a 3-rotor and claimed it to be CA emissions legal: http://www.mariahmotorsports.com/completecars.htm
How did they do this, anyone know?

Wow... I'm really curious as to how that car would be street legal. The 10AE was from 88 and Cosmos were built from 90-96 so the motor would have to be newer than the car which is one of the criteria that it would pass... but I always thought it was not street legal to swap an engine into a car that it was never offered in. I guess there's ways around it...

Lots of stuff is street legal, but smog legal is another story..

You will have to remove the firewall, remove the fenders and the hood to get it to fit. You can leave the bumper on though.

More seriously for the costs aspect of a 3 rotor do a search.. This is brought up every week.

It is legal to do an engine swap with a motor that was never offered in the car in the first place (which is why there are registered V8 powered RX7's). I wasn't aware that you could do it with an engine that was never legal in the US to begin with, though. You'd think that if they were advertising it, that it would be true. ::shrug::

I'm not sure how the laws are in Kalifornia. This RXX-7 is emissions-legal for DC, but it is limited to 10psi boost and hp is in the 400+ range. I believe it is still for sale if you are interested.

You want to put a 20B in your Corolla? I don't know anything about that, but maybe this video will help:
http://club4ag.com/Video/3%20rotor%20AE86.asf

A used 20B in good shape sells for about $4,000, and making it work in another car usually costs $6,000 - 16,000 more.

The FD conversion is $39,825.00 out the door.

From what I understand, if your car is 1972 or newer, it's required to pass smog if you live in a smog certifiable country in CA.&nbsp You CAN do an engine swap from a NEWER vehicle only, but that doner engine needs to have ALL emission equipment swapped over for it to pass emission laws; technically, this includes the STOCK exhaust system and catalyic convertors, but there's some gray areas at the tech stations.

I wasn't aware that you could do it with an engine that was never legal in the US to begin with, though.
That is true.&nbsp The Cosmo JC3S with the 20B was NEVER imported in the U.S., therefore arguing it can pass smog will get your no where.

There have been attempts to get this "rolling 20-year rule" passed few times a few years ago, but recent attempts have been quickly slammed shut.&nbsp I doubt this will EVER pass at this point in time.&nbsp The law is cars made from 1972 and newer require to pass smog, period.
