20B turbo FD project with v-mount, 42R, and more neat stuff!

Here is our 20B project that we have finished up a few weeks ago. Its taken many hours of custom fabrication, and what we feel is a unique approach to a 42R 20B.

Specs--

--C series 20b, All new rotor housings, dynamically balanced, NRS ceramic apex seals, Race rotor bearings, our own oil/ coolant modifications. Circuit Street Port intake and exhaust.
--Exedy triple plate clutch
--GT42R turbo
--Tial 60mm wastegate
--Electromotive Tec3R ecu
--Electromotive inductive coils
--D.A. custom turbo manifold, 321 stainless
--D.A. custom 3.5" downpipe and exhaust 304 stainless
--D.A. subframe conversion kit, and modified lower intake
--D.A custom intake box and filter
--D.A custom intercooler and radiator
--D.A custom intercooler pipes
--Twin setrab oil coolers
--Aeromotive kevlar braided oil lines
--Twin supra fuel pumps
--Aimsports race dash display
--Kaaz limited slip diff

Ever since the start of this project, the customer and us wanted it to have a full stock subframe. We also all know how much heat a 20b turbo produces, so a V-mount proved essential. After a lot of fitting and measuring, the GT42R turbo combined with stock subframe, a V-mount, and stock trans location proved very difficult. But with a bit of hard headiness, and creativeness it started to come together smoothly. The end result was worth it, placing the turbo backwards! A custom air box had to be made, and alot of heat shielding was added anywhere possible. Even with back to back dyno runs, the intake temps never got much above ambient. On the street the coolant and oil temps stay very cool, and after lots of hard abuse, never see much past 90C. The spool-up is great, power is broad to 8500rpm. So far its made 575rwhp at 15psi.

Here are the build-up pics-

The Car as it showed up from the previous shop. Time to pull the 2 rotor!

20B stripped and ready for rebuild!

Assembly.

nice work. i really dig the way you mounted the turbo and handled the intake. not sure if it's been done before but it's certainly the first time i've seen it.

Nice work Logan. I'm glad to see more of these coming along. One of these days I'll post some pictures of MY DA kit mounted, C-series, GT42R, V-mount FD.

The wiper motor is actually inside the air box. Took some time to squeeze in there but we got it to work.

Here is the dyno chart, its actually 574rwhp, 462 rwtq. We stopped the pull early due the original single disk clutch starting to slip. As you can tell it was on its way to over 600rwhp

Once we installed the new triple plate exedy clutch we started to tune again. Old spark plugs began to foul up causing ignition break-up. We did not have another set that night to install. Sadly due to it needing to get shipped out the next morning, we were forced to reduce boost to 13-14psi and make smooth pull to redline. 562rwhp is where it was put for safety with no time left.

Nice to see a 20B project completed in a reasonable amount of time. Good numbers too and I highly recommend, based on experience, the owner keep boost at a reasonable level and enjoy the car. Drive that monster!

Question - Are the results you are seeing for the turbo spool up pretty normal? Looks like the turbo doesn't hit full spool up until about 4,500 RPMs. If this is normal, is there a turbo that is capable of quicker spool up and a broader torque band while still making the level of HP you are hitting? I have the same issue with my 20B but would prefer more low-end torque, which the 20B is capable of. I'd think the GT42R would not even be in its efficiency range at this level of boost but my fear for the owner would be catastrophic results if boost is turned up. And the car would be not be drivable anyway at higher boost.

I would say the spool is normal for a 42R, and a bit faster than some other dyno charts I've seen. It also depends on the load time to make the pull, and if going through the gears on the dyno before hitting 4th, this will all help spool-up. I think a 4,000rpm power band is still pretty wide, but everything can be improved upon.

I don't mean to lead on like it's anything so mind-blowing. . .it's just another 20B fd. I used Logan's kit and modified an A-Spec manifold. My turbo points the traditional direction. I'm still running an un-opened block, so my numbers aren't anything too jaw-dropping (the chart is in my sig). I promise I'll make a thread some day. . .

The thing here, guys, is the quality of the workmanship. The fact that it was done in a reasonable amount of time. And, to Logan's credit, this is an enormously innovative build. Its Logan's custom stock mount and a backwards turbo install that gets much better and cooler air. Plus, there's a lot of quality fab work I can see in there that Logan isn't talking about yet.

As I think I've said in a few other posts, if you want a 20b powered car and have no issues with getting the car to Ohio, Defined Auto has become the real leader in this area. Other firms are going out of business left and right. Mandeville is full up with Mazda racing work and, frankly, has been doing this for long enough. (He's my age for God's sake.) Pettit seems a bit over the hill to me after having a really good run at this and may still be an option for those that are down there. Others in Florida like Lopez focus more on just the engines. And, while Ray Wilson at PFS is very good, they don't seem to have been doing much with 3 rotors since Peter (supposedly) left.

I think Logan really deserves a hats off on this piece of work. Plus, we haven't heard what the heck Calculon has to tell us about his car. Lord knows why he's not saying anything. (Calculon... I'm getting bored with hearing what you might tell us. For God's sake, man, just share whatever it is, eh?)

Gordon
Thanks for all the kind words Gordon! Not everyday you get a response like that. We are deeply honored, that great guys like you, David Hayes, and so many others like what we are doing. But every project at Defined Auto is a team effort. I in no way could manage it all by myself, especially during the 3 months I could barely move or work. Peter (S14.3bre and co-owner) pulled up all the extra slack, and deserves 50% of the credit for sure. (He is pictured earlier cutting off the electrical box so make fun of him lol). He has all my personal thanks too!
