a turbo 2 would be best. any 2nd gen will match up. the turbo trans is the strongest. an FD might fit, although i've never seen it done. make sure you get the counterwieght from the auto trans. the swap is usless without it

If your not going to make much power and not drag it.. t2 tranny should work fine. If you plain on going big turbo, drag car.. Go with somehting like a T-5, T-56 tranny.. You will most likely need an aftermarket tranny if your putting over 600lbs of torque.

Fd tranny fits just the same. Just make sure you use the tranny specified for the generation rx7 you are doing the conversion on. Reason is the turbo II tranny uses a cable for the speedometer while the Fd is electronic. If you use the Fd tranny in an Fc, your going to have to find a way to register your MPH.

not to mention the FD trans bolts up completely different than the FC trans. If the 20b is going into an FC, use an FC trans.

Why do you say that? I haven't looked SUPER close, but the guts at a glance look the same, but the FD case looks much stronger. Even after putting better guts in an oem tranny, the next weak spot is the case.

As stated above, use the tranny specified for the car. If building a track car, and don't need to read mph, then buy a 94 and up s6 tranny, has a better 5th gear syncro. I would only use this tranny if doing a basic 3 rotor build (<600 whp). Other tranny options include, t-56(vette, viper, cobra) v160(mkiv supra), or a custom gear box and case(liberty). The latter options are much more expensive but worth it if doing an extensive and high horsepower build.

Good Luck.

The OP posted this 2 years ago and with only 6 post i dont think he is coming back.

Thanks again Dan Devin for dusting off some old threads just to tell us you have some 20b powered cars. I wished you had gone with a 2jz so you could bug the people over on supraforums.
