Young man+ Old Car = ?
Evening folks. I'll try to not take up too much of your time, I appreciate it.
I've been driving now for the last few years here, and originaly I planned on restoring an RX7 that was more or less handed to my to repair. However, I ended up buying a 98 Saturn SL1 to drive around (Far easier on a student budget, you see)
However, It comes to summer time again and I have an 82 RX Thats collecting snow and more rust out at the shop. Up until now, I havent had alot of motivation for the project, because it seemed so far out of my grasp. However, I have had a bit of a boost in finances, and would like to finally attend to my dream car here.
This is where I need your help. I've run her a few times, making sure the engine kept clean and not carbon locked. Sounds really rough, I beleive its a carb issue. However, that isnt the least of my worries.
No clutch. It doesnt even feel spongy, it just drops to the floor.
Now, I inspected the lines and it would appear that every time the clutch is depressed, fluid goes flying out behind the engine. So, am I safe in assuming that a hydrolic line leak would cause the clutch to completely not work?
I need to know what part that is, specificly. I've tried talking to my local part dealers but they dont have a clue what to order or to look for x.x . If I could at the very least get the girl MOVING i'd be much more inclined to repairing her, ordering new side panels and getting her a paint job.
Any ideas?

You need a clutch master and slave cylinder and a rubber hose that goes from master hard line to the slave. Change all 3 at the same time. I bought mine at Advance Auto Parts. I've seen them on eBay as well. Slave cylinder is kind of hard to get off, so be patient...
Good luck!

So in essence, Im redoing the entire clutch eh?
Sounds fun. Though, I must admit the fruit tastes better from your own orchard huh? I guess if I put work into this machine, It'll only mean more to me in the end.
Allright, So now that we've got a good idea about what to do with the clutch, Would you suggest buying a completely new carborator, or getting a rebuild kit and going at it? Please bare in mind that I am only 18, and too much technical peices may be an unwise decision :P

You're not redoing the entire clutch, like dropping the transmission...much easier than that; but I do remember the bolts up behind the clutch pedal being really fun to get at.
If it's been sitting for a long time, personally I'd rebuild the carb. I'd also be getting new plugs for it. I rebuilt my carb with a Haynes manual, wasn't too difficult, I guess it depends what you have in the way of tools.

if its idling rough id check for vacuum leaks, im not saying the carb is ok, but it would be dumb if after u rebuild the carb the problem is still there. id rebuild the carb anyways if its been sitting, but check for vacuum leaks too.
You're replacing the clutch hydraulics. I think all 3 parts are only about $80 from rockauto.com. the slave cylinder is a minor nuisance to install: the trick is to get the pushrod end properly seated in the dimple in the operating lever.
For a carb you might want to try a rebuilt Nikki from Sterling/Carlrx7.

Allrighty. I was looking at Advanaced Auto parts and I beleive I can very well swing getting those parts, very excited! I was honestly expecting alot more!
So, Let me ask then: Theres a couple of manufacturers for the parts listed:
Raybestos
BeckArnley
And ACDelco
Prices are pretty close, with a 10 or 20 dollar difference. Which company is the best, in your guys opinion?
And, as far as the carb goes, Sterling and CarlRX7 are members on this board, or are they a place? A new carb will cost an arm and a leg *Laughs* And I still need to put fuel in this beast, that aint cheap either right now

Oem manufacturer for the cylinders is Tokico. Beck-Arnley is one of the standard aftermarket oem replacement units. They are all pretty much the same as for replacement quality.

So, your suggesting that I may be wise to just go with the Beck-Arnley equipment over the Raybestos? Raybestos is more expensive on the Master cylinder, while cheaper on the slave and the hydrolic hose. Over all, with the beck equipment,It comes to $98 after shipping, while the Raybestos comes to 120 aftershipping.
Save some money? I wont notice a difference in quality?
