Talking Yay, its finally making progress.

Well, most of you probably haven't took any notice of my little project here, so I think I'll post a couple pics of what I have been doing the past while, as far as my engine goes. Some of you have probably seen my thread on fuel cell installation and are probably wondering what the hell i'm trying to feed. Well, here ya go. I have a 600 CFM Edelbrock performer carb and Jay-Tech intake for the streetported S4 13B 6 port that sits in the car. I've got a couple pics of the setup too.

Here are pics of the intake manifold. Its a Jay-Tech manifold that i picked up for $125. I painted it because someone tried to grind it down and polish it up but it didn't work too well.

I'll get pics of when I mocked everything up on the car up sometime tomorrow. Put simply, slapping the carb on didn't go exactly as planed. The water pump neck got in the way and I had to bash at it to clear things.

The polished look is not for everyone but you probably could have hit it with a lighter sandpaper and then some polish and it would have turned out very nice. Well that is if the gouges were not too deep. Kind of hard to tell from the pictures.

Looks great though...I like the lettering.

It would have taken me hours just to finish the rough sanding. The casting on the manifold is very rough. Most of the roughness is gone, but in the tight areas its still there. The paint actually filled in the divots pretty good and the whole thing looks mostly smooth.

I figured I would highlight the lettering buy painting it red. Turned out excellent IMO. The whole thing is better than I was expecting.

Ok, here are the pics of the manifold and carb temporarily mounted to find clearances. The fourth pic is what I had to do to the water pump neck to clear the carb linkages. Oh ya, the air cleaner also clears the hood, even though it doesn't look like it. I've got about a half inch of clearance there, and once I put my torque brace on, that should be plenty. Clearances were a big concern with the manifold because its soo high.

hellz yeah! lookin good man! how much did the carb run? will it bolt to the stock intake? Im going to be looking for a carb very soon, so the more options I have the better.
Props!

I have one of those Jay-Tech manis, mine is a 4-port. Bought it off eBay, lister said it was for a 13B. I have test mounted it on every engine I had around the shop and the secondary ports sit above the irons. The only engine I haven't tried is a 3rd gen, don't have one of those laying around.

The carb is brand new, hasn't even had fuel in it yet. I just mocked things up so i could check clearances and whatnot. The carb itself was $400 plus another $75 for the FPR (bypass style for use with an FI pump), the intake mani was ~$150 and the fuel pump was $300. The fuel pump was originally bought to supply the original FI system that was on the engine, but I had nothing but problems tryin to get it to run right, so I just ditched it. Instead of getting a different fuel pump, I just bought a bypass style FPR. The holley FI pump is much quieter than the low pressure pumps they have anyway. Its nearly silent when running.

I'm not the first person to put an edelbrock on a rotary. A couple people have done it, but here is the most informative thread I found on the subject: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ght=Carter+AFB

A carter AFB is pretty much identical to an edelbrock performer series carb, so on a stock 12A those jet sizes should work excellent. My carb comes with jet sizes very similar to those in that thread so I figure the car should start up and run pretty good without even touching the jets and metering rods.

Yes, my car does need painting, but with 275K KM on it, thats expected. The whole body is going to be done up with a mariah mode 4 body kit hopefully. I'll have all the bodywork done professionally.

Trochoid, its possible that the manifold you got is for either a 3rd gen or a 74-78 4-port 13B. Chances are its for a 3rd gen though. I did a little research and actually found Jay-Tech's website and they make (or made) all kinds of throttle bodies with fuel injector bungs to fit on their intake manifolds. They are mostly designed to fit the 2nd and 3rd gen engines. Some of their setups are pretty wild. There is one with 8 injectors on it or something like that. 2 for each runner. I'll see if I can find the website again.

Anyway, thanks for all the nice comments. I've been waiting to post this stuff untill things started to come together. As of now, i pretty much got my modified rad support done, the 2nd gen oil cooler properly mounted, all the parts to make the engine run, and all of it fitting. Basically all thats left for the carb is the throttle cable bracket.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention that the carb linkage had to be modified to accept the 1st gen style throttle cable. It was meant to work with a GM or Ford style throttle cable, so i made a custom bracket on the linkage to mate the FB cable to the linkage. I'll get a pic of it and post it.

Oh ya, I should mention that if you use an edelbrock carb, or any off the shelf carb, you WILL have to use premix. There is no oil injection system on the engine anymore, I removed the OMP and put a blockoff plate in place. I just don't want anyone reading this thread and thinking they can use the stock oil injection with this setup. It will not work.

Heres a few pics of the throttle cable braket I made. Its not done yet, i have to get some gas for my welder then i gotta paint it up. I know i could have made it look a little better if i put the arm out on an angle, but this was the easiest way to do it. Surprisingly enough, the braket still flexes slightly when getting close to the end of travel. I thought i used thick enough metal to prevent that, but the amount of flex is minimal and its nothing to worry about.

The last pic is of the adapter I made for the linkage to mate it to the RX-7 style thottle cable. Its very blurry, but you can make it out.

never had an edelbrock carb, but i still use the omp with the holley.

Well, I guess I could have used the OMP with this setup as the 2nd gen engines had separate oil injectors on the rotor housings, but the whole system was in bad shape on this engine. The lines were all cracked and it was easier to just trash it. I planned on running premix from the start. BUT, if you have a 12A you will have to either make your own oil injection or trash the OMP and run premix. The carb on the 12A has the oil injection built in, while the Edelbrock does not. A RB holley setup does have the oil injection built in.
