WTG: MMO or what? (ASAP)

Alright,

I got paid 180 bones today from work and looking to blow it (of course about 70 of it is going to bills..car note jeesh).

I know my 0-60 is 10 seconds. I'm going to buy some fuel cleaner, downgrade to 87 octane (was using 89) and then buy some MMO?

I don’t know what MMO is or what kind of bottle it looks like...

Any help on this subject (read the FAQ...it's not directly related to me).

I have a 13B 85 GSL-SE.

I want to get carbon out and my fuel running nice and purtty so what all should I do to the engine.

Also I don't premix because I don't know what I'm supposed to be mixing and if it's safe for a daily drive/sprinted street racer.

Thanks,
Eric

Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) is in a red bottle and can be purcahsed in a gallon jug. It usually resides near the carb cleaner and other oil additives. I use about 4-6oz per tnk when pre-mixing. You could also use a 2 cycle oil to pre-mix instead on MMO into the tank.

So,

I need to carry a jug of MMO around with me at all times in my car (is it possible to buy just quarts?).

4-6 OZ Per Full Tank? (Half a quart I assume...)

Call me a critic, but I wouldn't use straight MMO to premix with. I firmly believe that it was developed as an additive, NOT a lubricant. Regardless, even if you do 4-6 ounces, that isn't enough. You should be doing about 1 oz. per gallon, or about 8 oz. for a fillup. At any rate, I would premix with a quality two stroke and just mix in the MMO to keep things clean. I wouldn't use the MMO as a lubricant. I did some rather intensive research that you can read if you'd like. It will explain in much more detail what I'm talking about. I would highly recommend it before you make up your mind. Good luck!

So,

Wait, the oil sending unit would have to be blocked off to pre-mix the fuel/oil?

Also, what's a good fuel cleaner for the rotaries? I used Lucas in my thunderbird every once in a while.

Thanks,
Eric

It only needs to be removed if you are planning on permanently switching to premix, instead of stock oil injection. If you are going to premix, most people remove and block off the oil metering pump (OMP). Usually with a homemade aluminum blockoff plate. The haynes manual refers to it as the metering oil pump. Its the thing that is in the front cover of your engine, down at the very bottom on the passenger side. There should be two plastic lines coming from it, that dump into your fuel injeciton somewhere. (forgive me I'm a 12A guy not 13B , they're almost identical though). Just take of the OMP and then run 1 oz. per gallon of your favorite lubricant through with the gas.

If you are just looking to clean things up a bit, but still want to remain stock then don't take off the OMP. Just dump some MMO into your tank and run it through. This should clean out any buildup in the fuel lines, and might start to clean up the carbon in your engine. Keep in mind that your injected oil will be cumulative with this method. That is, you're going to be getting what you have put in the gas tank, PLUS whatever your OMP continues to inject. You'll probably be getting double the required oil but it won't hurt anything. She may smoke a little because of the extra oil though.

If you really want to get the carbon out of your engine just dump some MMO into the spark plug holes, crank her over, and let it sit in there for a while. Or you can also look up how to "steam" your engine. I've heard this works well too. Hope this helps...

BTW: MMO comes in all different sized containers. I usually buy a 32 oz container I think. I've never seen the gallon ones, but they do exist. They all look practically identical though. Here's a pic of a smaller container. MMO is good stuff.

GlazedHam,

Very interesting post. It is nice to see that people are still performing detailed analysis of products. I was under the assumption that Pele was still using the stock OMP, hence the reason I suggested the 4-6oz of MMO. If deleting the OMP, I agree that a nice synthetic 2-stroke oil would be better than MMO. I like either Amsoil or Royal Purple for this. I think for street driving around 8 oz per tank is sufficient and 1 quart for track applications.

Well,

What are the pro's and con's of deleting the OMP?

I can just buy a bottle of MMO and dump into my gas tank when I go to fuel up? (assuming I don't delete the OMP and just want to clean the carbon out)

Thanks,
Eric M. Pelezo

Well, yes, you can just dump in the MMO, but I wouldn't put the whole bottle in!! It only takes 8 ounces for an entire fillup. Putting in the whole bottle would be four times as much! (Most MMO comes in 32 oz. bottles). Plus whatever your OMP is injecting! If you're leaving the OMP on I would recommend about 4-8 oz. per fillup. Whatever you feel is right, or you can put up with. The fumes and smoke can be annoying at times. Obviously the more you put in the faster the carbon will probably be cleaned out...

Keep in mind that MMO isn't like that cheap jet fuel "fuel injector cleaner" that Autozone sells. It isn't a one time deal that you just pour in. People sort of discovered its carbon cleaning power on their own, so use it rather sparingly. MMO is more of an oil than it is a fuel, so if you put too much in its gonna smoke like a chimney.

My motor hit 20,000 the other week, and ive been premixing MMO on day one. Im really considering once I install PROJECT TORQUE to crack open my old motor so we can examine the wear and tear of using MMO as a premix. SO you guys may finally have a REAL answer in april!!

BTW for premixing, MMO, use one ounce per gallon. Does me just fine. I also run NO OMP.

Alright,

So, about a 1/4 of the bottle will go in every gas tank? I don't mind smoking; it actually makes me laugh when the people at Fast Food restraunts close their windows on only me due to the exhaust fumes.

Thanks,
Eric

I think it would be a fantastic contribution if you did. It would be really impressive if you could compare the wear of the components as well as the carbon buildup with another OMP operated rotary. Then we could really have something to use in these arguments. If you do decide to do this please take numerous amounts of pictures. I'd be particularly interested to see how clean the inside of your engine is. I am guessing it will be just about spotless. I think the real mystery lies in how well the components have been lubricated.

I say go for it Hornbm!
