wtf is w/ my car?

i just found out that on my car i dont have studs for my wheels that the lug nu ts are on but that it has actual bolts that bolt into my wheel so when i tried to swap wheels today i couldnt. is this common and do u knwo how to fix it?

If a previous owner has changed the wheel hubs to use studs, it would possibly have different bolt pattern. That would explain why you could not swap wheels.

it didnt have studs it just bolted right into the wheel here is a pic of the car

when i bought it i thought that they were stock but from looking at other ppls i geuss they arent and they are on an 85 gsl

Sorry what do you mean about studs then? I thought you said it had studs. 4 lug bolts are the standard way the wheels are attach, so maybe they are re-drilled or changed to a different dimension. Which wheels did you try to put on it? Measure the distance to see if it is 110mm or otherwise.

and u've had this car how long? all pre '86 cars have lug bolts, no studs. what kind of wheels did u try to swap? 1st gen, non gsl-se wheels should work unless the previous owner changed the bolt pattern.

i didnt know that i have only had my car for 2 months at max now. i have never seen that i was tryign to put these wheels my buddy w/ a 240sx has on them here is a quick photoshop of them on my car

is there a way to put studs on this wheel so i can put normal wheels on it. also how comon on other vehicles are there not studs b/c on every car i own or have owned there have been studs on it. also my dad said the same thing any suggestions on how to mount these wheels then?

The fastening method makes no difference. The wheel does not care whether it is a bolt or stud holding it on. If you have lug nuts or lug bolts is all the same effect to hold the wheel onto the hub. It is very simple.

If wheel does not fit then you simply have the wrong size wheel. The holes in the wheel must match up to the holes in the hub. Even if you had studs through the holes the dimensions between studs would remain the same, and would not change how the wheel fit.

To mount the different size wheels you must change the hubs or redrill them to a different pattern. And then remains no difference in fit of using lug bolts or studs. Fit is determined by the distance between holes.

the non SE 1st gens have 4x110 bolt pattern. u could change to the SE 4x114.3 which will open up a wide range of wheel choices. don't know the pattern of the 240. in case u need to know how to measure the pattern. 110/25.4=4.331 which is roughly 4 21/64". the 114.3/25.4=4.5".

Sounds like you have the wrong bolt pattern on the new wheel. Your car comes stock w/ lug bolts. You can buy threaded studs and convert over, but either way the wheel will fit if its the right bolt pattern. CHeck that the bolt pattern on a 240 matches the 1st gen RX's (4x110). I think you have a SE pattern wheel maybe (4 x 114.3).

sry guys for not being clear. the wheel will fit just fine but it comes w/ key lock lug nuts and the bolts are too large to fit in the whole of the lug nuts other wise the wholes line up just fine what i need to know is where can i get some studs now thanks for all the info tho.

Mazdatrix sells them. www.mazdatrix.com And I'll also put money on it that the wheels are 114.3x4, not 110x4. 4.3 mm isn't alot, but enough to make a very big difference. You might wanna search on the lug pattern for the Nissan.

u guys are right that it is 4x114.3 so then i have 2 choices right get new wheel hubs off a gsl-se or drill new hole's? any thing else i should knwo?

The other thing to check is the offset. If you switch to the SE hubs, the wheels should have about a 38mm offset. The non-SEs use like 17mm IIRC. I am not sure what the 240 uses off-hand, but you should check before deciding which method that you are going to use to put the wheels on.

And BTW, the SE does use studs with lugnuts. The non-SEs use the lugbolts.

Is your car a GSL? I see that your profile says it is an '85. If it is a GSL, the SE stuff will be easy to switch over. Try to get the calipers, caliper mounts, etc. too. The discs are larger on the SE, so the other stuff (besides the hubs/discs) has to be switched as well.

If you car is a GS or S, then it is going to be hard to swap over to the SE stuff on the rear unless you swap the whole rearend out.

Sorry, I don't. Maybe someone else has the info. This shows the parts used by the different models:

Just see what is different between the SE and the non-SE and get those parts. I guess it looks like you will need the rear axles as well. I know the front spindles are the same, so you just need the hubs/rotors, calipers, dust shield, mounting stuff from the front. Once you have all of the parts, everything should swap over pretty easily, though.

Having your hubs redrilled would probably be easier (if the offset is right or if you can use spacers to get the offset right). If you go the SE route though, you will get better brakes in the process.
