Exactly what the title says. There is a thing that attaches to the mid pipe of my `85 GS. It has a rectangular 2 bolt flange with a steel braided cable coming out of it. It attaches to a corresponding 2 bolt flange on a stalk that is welded to mid pipe right behind the converter. The "stalk" is hollow and goes into the pipe. The piece that attaches to it however is pretty much nothing. Just a flange with a wire coming off it. WTF is this thing? My only guess is that it's "supposed" to be some type of 02 sensor that uses an open element instead of a housed element, and the element is gone. Anyone know for sure?? Thanks

Wouldn't that be the "over heat exhaust system" sensor?

 

Hmmmm..... sounds like a possibility. Didn't know it had anything like that. I guess the exhaust overheated then if the end is fried off I removed the converters because they were glowing red. I guess this sensor isn't all that necessary then, or does it control something on the engine?

That braided thing sounds like a ground strap. I'm not sure what the rest of it is.

The overheat exhaust sensor is screwed to the sheet metal of the car above the cat location.

 

I knew it had to do with the cat...

When you turn your car to "on" just before cranking, you should see the Overheat Exhaust light come on with all the other warning lights.

I'm thinking the 02 sensors were in the ex. manifold so I guess it is just a ground. The pipe should be a vent tube tracing back to the carb for emissions.

 

It's not a ground strap, it's a braided cable with either 1 or 2 wires inside that runs to a grommet in the floor to allow it to enter the car. Where it attached on the pipe is a hollow stalk to allow access to the exhaust flow. A ground strap would just bolt to a flange or something and ground to the body.

he steel braided line that is bolted to the stock muffler canister is a support line incase ur brackets and **** that hold ur muffler on brake it wont drag its a little extra

 

Its an exhaust temp sensor. if you look at the wiring diagram for your car (assuming you have the right model exhaust, and somebody hasn't done the junkyard boogie with parts) you will see that it ties into the dash panel idiot lights and simply warns you of overheating in the cats or in the area around the cats.
