Thumbs up this is the add

this is the add
i emailed with request for pics with inside and vin plate pix

1979 RX-7 all or parts. Sunroof is good and all parts are there, headlamps pop up and down, clock in dash works, windows crank up and down fine, stainless steel sport strip over roof in great condition, strange option of later model tail lights in an early body car, I have a glass sunroof for this year (1979-1980 only) that could be for sale for the right price, you can have the engine (runs good but carb needs work) for $300 but if you want the whole car and engine you can have it for $350. $100 for the car minus the engine.

dash is cracked and interior is maroon/red and needs to be replaced

tires look fairly new and hold air

I can send more pix if wanted

Looks a an SA which got a little bodywork in the tail make it appear like a later model. The Targa bands were a add on option. When they did away with the depression in the rear in 81 it was considered a visual improvement by most. I'd say a previous owner sometime up graded it for what ever reason (crash?) popped in the later tail lights and center pannel and created this oddball.

Could be a chop car. When 1st gens were young they were worth salvaging after a bad front or rear end collission, and sometimes two cars would be cut in half then welded together.

i know someone who had a 79-80 and converted to the 81+ style, its not easy, you need to change the FA01-70-750!

edit; i think the paint on the quaterpanels doesnt match the door/fender

ps; manntis is right, people used to steal these things and stuff would get swapped

get some pix of the front showing the fenders and bumper. so far it looks like an fb with sa bumpers. either way u can't beat the price. get him to send pic of the vin plate too. but yeah if it was stolen and chopped at some point there's no telling what it is.

It's got the narrow SA body molding too instead of the wider FB.

The tail doesn't look right it does look like it was modified with another piece body worked in the top body line, there is something about the edge that just doesn't sit right with me but who knows i could be wrong. just as everyone has said it has a lot of SA specfic pieces also for those that care to notice the rear window trim triangles are SA specific and most people won't bother to change those.

VIN number would settle this decisively with regard to the original config (of the front half, at least.)... and anyone looking to sell a car should be completely willing to cough up the VIN.

Pic quality makes it hard to see the rear-window triangles... but they changed a bit in shape SA to FB, did they not? Pretty sure the SA triangles are more curved than the FBs.

Odd that the add mentions a glass sunroof for "79 - 80 only" cars, since the sunroof for 79's is different from that of 80's. If it's the early-style sunroof, that could confirm that everything back to the targa band is '79.

Dave, Glen, good catches with the window trim and roof actuation! Yes, the vin would be the bible here.

the SA ones (window triangles) have a foreward slant at the base making them side specific the FB ones don't and therefore can be interchanged from side to side the pic is good enough that i can say for sure the ones here are SA

i think on the right side you can see a little (rust?) spot where the quarter panel meets the center panel (fa01-70-750!) meets the taillight.

the center panel welds in, but its complicated, there are some brackets and things in there
