Would You Want Custom A-Pillar Pods?

Well, I have had an interesting idea. I have a member in my family that has a vacuum forming/mold making setup...And I was thinking about trying to sell them on the idea of making gauge pods for our cars again. If this works, heres what I was thinking:

FULL PILLARS!! No more screwing them on.
Left and right hand drive, and right hand pillars for left hand drive cars (so you can see them easier), and vise versa.
Single, dual, and triple pods
Optional tweeter pods at the base of the pillars?

Sound good to you guys? Would you buy them? How much would you be willing to pay? I might be jumping the gun here, but I think it would be worth investigating...

~T.J.

PS - Im not making any promises, I dont know how this will work out...I just thought Id see how much support would be out there.

I'd pay $40 for a 2 pod, $60 for a three with a tweeter at bottom

Hmmm..

What do you think?

Seriously guys, A 2nd Gen dual Autometer Pod is $25, and goes on in 3 minutes flat with the use of a heat gun.

Personally, I would rather see the positive energy focused to something like..

Convex ("Objects in mirror are closer than they appear") style rear view mirrors on the doors.

Something that is 2 5/16" is going to be awfully hard to see from the opposite side of the car

Really? You have pics? I was gonna get one, and I was at the shop and everything, but before I bought it I walked out to my car with it (leaving my licese as colateral, lol) and test fitted it. Now way it was gonna work. I think the pillars are different between 81-83 and 84-85.

Also, I want a three pod pillar, and no one has one for even a CRX that I have found...If someone know where I can get a three pod pillar that will fit, let me know. Im still gonna research the idea myself, and Ill keep you posted with what I find out.

Ok, well they have them over there that would fit my car, but are they really for 2" gauges, or are they the 2 1/16" gauges?

The hole is 2 -1/16 (or 52mm), made for a standard 2" gauge.

TJ, if you want three, Buy a double and a single.

Personally, I think your field of vision with three gets restricted too much, but that's just me. 2 is Perfect.

What gauges you planning on running?

Well, when I was trying to diagnose my oil pressure gauge problem, I decided I wanted a mechanical oil pressure gauge so Id have a "double reassurance" type thing. Then, when I was having problems with my alternator, my dash was saying one thing, and my volt meter another, I want the "double reassurance" on that as well. Then, just because I dont really trust the stock temp gauge, and because Im running an e-fan that Id like to monitor more closely as to when its kicking on and off, a water temp gauge. Basically, oil PSI, water temp, and volts. I was gonna go with Auto Meter Phantom series gauges, but they have to wait on the money like everything else . Then, later, I wanted to add the right B pillar pod cause I was gonna put A/F ratio, boost/vacuum, and nitrous oxide pressure after I go turbo . But thats obviously a long ways off, lol

~T.J.

PS - The main reason I want a-pillar pods is cause I dont have any other real place to mount gagues in my car (83 interior) without distrubing the stock look too much, and I want to preserve it as much as possible. Im actualy getting "new" pillars from thejunk yard so I dont drill mine for the gauges, thats how much I dont wanna mess with my mint interior, lol.

PPS - I love all the gauges in your car...If I had the room (and the money, lol) mine would look like that too. I like knowing whats going on everywhere with my car, and around it.

Make sure that you use an ELECTRICAL gauge for the Oil. Don't use a mechanical.

But, but, but...I have an electrical gauge, I wanted something mechanical to give me a second opinion...Why not mechanical? I suppose I could go with an electrical, as long as its quicker and more accurate than the one I have now.

And it replaces the whole pillar so there is no seam or "stuck on with 3M tape" appearance? Really?

A mechanical gauge means you're going to have to run a physical plastic tube full of hot pressurized oil into the cabin to the gauge...not recommended for street cars where easy access to a fire extinguisher and being entombed in a Nomex suit are not easily possible...

Well I know that, I was gonna either have a copper line made by my uncle (thats what he has in his Scout, and it works fine) or make a braided hose for it. I just thought that another electrical gauge would be pointless, as I already have one of those, and there just seems to be a bigger margin of error (bad senders, shorts, grounds, wires, etc) but with a mechanical gauge, you only have to worry about lines leaking and stuff. I just think that it would be better that way. Anyone else have opinions?
