i know i know

hey everyone

i know what everyone is going to say when i ask this.. but i did a search and didn't find much info... i have a 84 rx-7 gsl.. engine and everything good.. i want to do an engine swap cause the 12as don't have any power and i would love to put another rotarty engine in it but the price is what i'm worried about.. i have a couple questions... what engines can u put in a rx-7 ( non-turbo non-nos)??? i have about 3k maybe 4k ( if i wait)to spend on motor and instalation.. so i don't have much.. it's going to be a daily driver car so i don't want to spin my tires everytime i touch the gas.. i want to run mid to high range 13's in the 1/4.. this is mainly for street racing. nothing that big.. i just want to be able to beat all the ricers in asheville ... can any 1 help me out on what i should do..

Get yourself a nice big streetported 12A and an intake and exhaust to match. Should be well within your budget if you're up to building it yourself, plus no fab work is involved. And if you still want to go faster, then just add lightness.

well that is a good idea.. but i don't know **** about cars. and i would have to have someone do all that for me which cost alot of money lol... how much does the hp does the 13b has? and about how much does a new one cost? and plus i heard that the streetported engines or bridge port don't last that long and if i'm going to put this kind of money in it i want to know how long it's going to last..

street ported 12a should get you in the 13's

they're pretty choked up as stock

and if you ever want to get anywhere with this sort of stuff, you'll just have to learn to do it yourself. not that hard really

$5000 = streetport 13b 4 port, RB streerport exhaust, 48 idf and manifold and fuel system.

200-220 hp. sound good as hell too.

heres a setup for you, a 89-91 13b n/a engine, this engine makes stock form 160hp due of the hi compression rotors, a weber or holley setup (i recomend webers), stock distributor with MSD 6al box and MSD blaster 2 coils, and a nice racing beat short primary exhaust (header, presilencers, and muffler) that good il say about 190-210 hp. if you want more, street port the engine. that my sugestion

Thing is

- a 2nd gen eats up a lot of it's higher horsepower with higher weight.

- you mentioned money as an issue - 2nd gens actually can cost more to fix (some electrical relays are over $150!)

- 1st gens are just entering a period of styling caché and are often confused for Porsches. People from hottie 18 year old girls to men in their mid-life crisise stare at my SE with lust and envy. @nd gens are often confused with Dodge Daytonas.

- if you're looking to swap cars rather than engines, get a 1st gen GSL-SE. It has 135 HP stock and can easily make closer to 170 just by bolting in a Racing Beat exhaust system and high flow (K&N) air filter, plus give you a broad torque band and bigger brakes.

I'd look at getting a GSL-SE like Manntis said, you should be able to get a real good one for 4K. Streetporting doesn't generally make the engine unreliable like bridgeporting can. The web of metal between the ports on a bridge can crack with time.

People confuse my RX4 with an Opel or Toyota pretty regularly. Little do they know... -Mike

Like said before: a N/A 2nd gen isn't that much faster, it's too heavy. A first gen is a nicer car anyway
Swapping an engine doesn't take an engineer. All you need is common sense. If you don't have that: try public transportation... But since you intended on getting a nice first gen, you must have some common sense (as long as you on't start about putting a V8 in there!)
Since a GSL-SE wasn't sold overhere, I have to swap to a 13B myself. It's not that hard, and I'm in the middle of it. A good 13B with RB exhaust and stuff like that will be some extra HP. If you don't want to try that out, go GSL-SE. Should fit the budget, and you can always upgrade later.

disreguard the 13b motors in 2nd generations.. now i have one more question be4 i make my choice.. i'm leaning towards the gsl-se cause i love the body style of my car and the interior but i the interior in my car is all the hell so i'm going to get a 85 gsl-se just cause FIRST GENERATIONS RULE THE STREETS.. but with all that aside r the 85 gsl-se that heavy compared to a new rx-7 like a 90 model

can you really make 170hp with racing beat exhaust and k&n on a gsl-se??? if so.. damn

in my opinion, the only second gen worth getting is a 89-91 TII (my dream car over an fd) i agree with everyone else.. even though the second gens have a bigger 13b engine, they arent too much quicker because of the weight. in my opinion, hp and torque arent as important as power to weight, thast why you see motorcycles running 10's, stock.

but if you dont know enough about cars to swap a motor, i wouldnt get into rotaries. to me, i wouldnt let anyone do any work to my car unless it was my dad or me. that way, when something breaks, you have a pretty good idea on what/how something broke.
