.:work in progress:.

I have been working on this car since I got it. I am close to painting it. I just need to touch up a few spots and give it more sanding. I am waiting on an MSD 6a and a carb rebuild kit. I got 4 summimotos or sumitomos not sure what they were called, there not in the pics. Let me know what ya think. The front peice with all the bondo on it is going to be replaced so I stoped working on it.

looks like you have alittle more rust areas to finish...don't want to paint the car without properly fixing them...otherwise it will spread

I can't view the photos from work, but I might have some info for you. I have had very good results using Muriatic acid to treat rust. You can find this cheap at most hardware stores. Apply it to the rust, and let it sit for 20 minutes or so, then rinse with lots of water. This will not only remove the rust, but will treat the metal so that the rust will not return right away.

This looks like ****:

Why don't you take a little more time and do it right?

No offense, but that is damn shoddy.

Agreed. If theres serious rust under there, its structural and needs a better repair. Just covering it up is not a good idea. Thats a common heavy rust area on these cars.

ohh well.. I made sure I got all the rust out of it. Then I treated it really well. Then I cleaned it out again but with some mineral sprits then as soon as it was dry I shot some primer on it. Then I waited for a day and tossed some fiberglass on it. (the outside)

the ones that look at it.. and know what they are doing go.. think damn thats aweful, wth did he do!

The ones that don't know **** about doing body repair will look at it and say damn.. i can do a better job than that.

I don't care what ya think. Its my first time EVER doing body work. I can not wait till i finish.. FTW! people judge first then ask are you done.

Thanks all for your honest opinions of my work.

Can someone tell me what to remove and what to tape off.. I need to get it ready for a paint job.

I jsut finished rebuilding that nikki carb. I want the car to stay stock for now, I found something broken, you know on the choke system, where the coil sping is in? that theres a double dash pot? well the actuator lever that connects these 2 things is broken its a black lever. Anyone got extra carb parts?

edit: i treated it 1st with rust dissolver.. (its the small white bottle with the brown lable on it) then I treated it with some other antirust agent, its blue and is very much like water. You can see it working allmost immidiately after spraying it.

Dr. Clever, don't pay much attention to these know-it-alls, they think anything not done exactly the way they did it (or would do it, if they actually did work on cars) looks like ****. You deserve credit for your initiative and for getting a pretty beat up old 7 back on the road. That Mass salt is nasty and in the end it will win the day. But if you can get that baby patched up and back on the road for a few more years, without paying some bodyman's $100,000 salary, more power to you!

"Anyone got extra carb parts?"

Dr. Clever, forgot to mention I do have a spare Nikki sitting around, if you post a picture of your broken part I will try to salvage it for you.

Also I hope you don't get the impression from this post that RX7club members are unhelpful jerks, this is just a vocal minority. Most are very knowledgeable and eager to help, what goes around comes around.

Good luck with the project!

Drunk Clever. My 84 had terrible rust on the rear wheel wells. If u have the time and the resources try to tack that down with a MIG or TIG welder, get a bodywork hammer (2 flat heads) maybe even an extra person holding a body work block under the fender and hammer that thing smooth. Then apply lots-o-fiberglass and sand smooth. Gives way more strength and will last forever. Fiberglass the outside section og the rusting wheel well also. Hell if u have enough glass do both wheel wells to prevent future corosion.

Just grind the hell outa that rust and it will never come back.... well at least not for a few years :P

If you see rust get a wire brush or grinder get rid fo it and prep and prime the bare metal just as u have been doing. Invest in some good bodywork tools you will need them many many more times if you want to start fixing up old cars.

Got a bodywork question? PM me. I'll watch this thread too.

You got me rotaries_only, I'm a bigot and I'm picking on bodywork folks. But shoot, at least I have a sense of humor about it and I would never call your work ****. Thanks for giving our good friend in Mass some help and support, your advice is just what the home bodyman needs to get into business.

"Just grind the hell outa that rust and it will never come back.... well at least not for a few years :P"

You can't buy advice like that.
