Question Won't Start, Keeps Flooding

I've got a problem that I'm stumped on...

The car's an 84 12A. Just put in engine and have driven it a couple of days, but I realized I timed it incorrectly. I timed it off the rear rotor instead of the front rotor. I'm trying to time the motor correctly now, but I can't get it started. It keeps flooding. I've repeatedly tried to clear the floor, add ATF down the carb, and restart with new plugggs, but it contunues to flood. The engine will cough and sputter, like it's going to start, but won't quite start. I'm getting smoke out of the exhaust, so I have some combustion, but can't get the engine started on it's own. When I remove the plugs, they are dripping with gas. I've run out of ideas. Please help. What else can I try. I've though of getting a help to try to push start it, maybe that will give it more force than the starter.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Levent

Yes. I pull the plugs and clean them. Pull the engine fuse from the box and spin the engine til I don't see smoke. Then I put the plugs back in, put a cap full of ATF in each primary barrel, replace the fuse, and try again. I tried this about 8-10 times yesterday with the same results... coughing, almost starting, some smoke from the tailpipe, but it just won't catch and run on it's own.

I'm stumped....

If you turn the key on, but dont try to start it, does it flood the carb? If so, the floats are stuck. Sometimes you can loosen them by tapping the carb with a big screwdriver. If that doesn't work, you can take the top hat off the carb and check the floats. If that still doesn't work, slap another carb on there.

I'm in the middle of this routine with an 85 GSL I just picked up. I'm at the swapping out carbs point...
