Wont rev past 1,500 RPM
Wont rev past 1,500 RPM
Ok. So I finally got to take my baby out for a test drive today. She ran pretty good for about 5 blocks only running to 3,000rpm before shifts. Then on my way back she ran out off gas (non working gas gauge). I had hoped there was enough to do a few laps around the neighborhood then take a trip to the gas station. So I get some gas and tweaked the carb a little and get it to idle a little better. I take her out again and get about 6 blocks and she just dies. I pull around a corner and and try to start her back up but she will only run for a couple seconds before dying. I mess with the carb a bit and get her running. I get about 1/2 a block and she dies again. I decide to reset the carb and start over. I get her to idle better than ever right at about 850-900. As soon as I try to give it some gas she dies. As soon as the needle hits 1,500 it just flat out dies. I tried to mess with the carb again but that just made it idle worse and had no affect on it dying. It doesn't seem to be the accelerator pump. I saw no leaks and no matter how slowly I apply the gas it still dies. I'm running a 4 port 13B with a rebuilt nikki and a carter fuel pump. I'm not sure what pressure the fuel is at since I didn't have my gauge hooked up. I will check that tomorrow. I have 2 fuel filters and both are new. I did a test at one point to see if it was fuel starvation, so I ran it till she died and killed power to the pump and I think at least the front fuel bowl was empty (couldn't see the rear) but I was parked in the shade so I couldn't really tell. I'll test again tomorrow. I'm also going to check the filter by the pump just in case something in the tank came loose. Can anyone think of anything? Any help is appreciated.
Sounds like the primary fuel jets are clogged. But then how does fuel get down into the idle circuit? I haven't looked that deep in a Nikki for a while.
Suggestion: Take the top of the carb off and blow some air into the air bleeds and/or venturi boosters. See if any crud pops out of a jet. I had that happen in the white REPU (Hitachi carb) due to a bad filter letting stuff through. The Carter (Same model as yours) was able to pull solid particulates through the filter. The problem was temp fixed by adding another filter up in the engine bay. One of those see-through types, and it was catching the solids chunks until I was able to change the main filter before the pump.
When you drive it hard, more junk gets stired up from the bottom and can enter the fuel system. Since your car sat for so long, merely driving it could be enough for that to happen if you've got a dirty tank.
Another option is to throw the Hotachi back on. It at least had a good primary circuit. A good way to troubleshoot. Oh and get a pressure gauge on there! It's easier to see than the little float bowl windows. But they're still useful to tell when you've got a stuck float.

Clogged jets or inlet screens, or a badly clogged filter would be my initial targets.
As it got progressively worse after sucking the dregs out of the tank (meaning you vacuumed up the most crud possible), clogging is high on my suspect list.

A clog was my first thought. I'm going to check filters today. I have 2 of the clear ones like Jeff. One before the pump and one before the carb. The one before the carb has some small pieces in it so I'm sure the other one has more.
Yep, small pieces in the front filter mean big pieces in the rear filter. Just keep changing them until the number of debris goes down. Or drop the tank and have it cleaned. Filters are cheap. Dropping a tank is somewhat time consuming and having it cleaned is $? Not sure, never done it before.
My GSL-SE tank was dirty inside. I'll keep an eye on the filter and change it when I see chunks.

Considering it's been 6 years since he last posted, I kind of doubt you're going to see an answer.
