NE wiring questions

Just bought an 85 RX-7 GS and the previous owner hack up some of the electrics. None of the interior lights come on, no power. He had installed an aftermarket radio and spliced into theradio wiring, no big deal. The clock only comes on if I turn on the headlights? My question is: I buying a stock radio and what do the black and cream colored connectors do? As he doesn't have these connected, I pulled the compartments behind the seats. I've looked at the wiring diagrams but I'm a hands on guy, I don't do good reading schematics or blueprints.

Thanks in advance and I'm sure we'll be chatting more as I get deeper into the car.

P.S. The car has 67,000 miles, new tires, has been repainted, and is missing some of the vacuum solenoids with lines plugged. Runs alright but of course with some of the vac lines removed it idles at about 1700. Drives like a go cart, it's fun!!

Well buddy before I even look at manual you need to find out all the places that are hacked up and mark them. You need to get a test light. It sounds like he hacked the interior lights like a dummy and connected the power there. You're going to have to sit down and make sense of everything, I'll help you the best i can with questions being 800 miles away from my car. I do a lot of wiring and repairing in my job, and sworn not to fail, so I should be able to help you. Heres the manual http://www.wankel.net/%7Ekrwright/fi...g_Diagrams.pdf

Sounds like yours was owned by the same guy as mine. I just finished sorting out all the wiring. As stated, phase one is to find where he did and didn't get into. Removing the dash and carpeting may sound daunting but is worthwhile when making sense of the harnesses. It is most likely that your predecessor didn't get into much that is tough to access, except for the amps in the storage bins, which are almost always disconnected when someone installs a stereo and doesn't know what they're doing. Just take it step by step, starting at your accessories and tracing them through their harnesses to the fuse box. Most likely, only a few things have been hacked into, and are shorting or causing other things to appear bad.
Figuring out someone else's crappy home wiring is a job for the bold, but it's doable if you go about it logically.
Best of luck.

My car is the same. I have most of it fixed now. I bought the car from a friend of mine. When he first bought the car the radio shorted when he was driving down the road. The people wire the radio in to the power side of the fuse block with no fuse. He shut the car off as soon as it started to smoke and not too much melted under the dash.

Well I thought about it for a minute and It seems that he messed something up, then tied in a few other things into the interior lights like the clock. Start with the headlight switch, follow the wires to the connector and then if thats not hit(very likely.) Then disconnect the connector and use that as a test point( this is under the steering wheel.) Keep me posted alright?
