I have an 85 rx7 GS and the engine inside is a 12a. I've finally decided I wanted to get a 13b! My friends tell me the new engine should fit in the car just fine. On the other hand my dad tells me that it's not gonna fit. he said the the GSL models are slightly wider, just slightly. And said he already asked some of the car salesmen, around when the car was bought, that they said a 13b would not fit in the 85 GS.
I asked my friends recently and my dad asked years back. So I finally want to know if a 13b would fit in my 85 GS.

 

tell your dad to go **** himself. he's being an ******* parent, by trying to protect you by filling your head with lies. that is one of the most popular Rx-7 swaps. honestly, go do a search for 13B, and make it search only in the first gen section.

A 13b would fit in no problem. If you want the most direct bolt, you would probably want to use one off an 84-84 GSL-SE ... THey're are the exact same body as s,gs,gsl with the exeption that it was the only model that offered the 13b stock in there. If you search on this forum you will find all kinds of conversions about a 13B, 13BTII, and 13BREW engines being swapped to a 1st gen body.

 

****, a 3 rotor 20b will fit in there just fine. I dare say that a 787b motor would fit, although you'd have to move the radiator forward.

 

i have a 82 gs and i am planing to do a 13bt swap in the future ,soo it will fit inside my fb just fine or do i still have to get the motor mounts and do any types of customs to it

 

Go all out and have a custom 4 rotor engine made, then show your dad who's the boss, and it still isn't Tony Danza.

 

Well your going to need a bunch of things... A carb setup/intake for the 13b, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, exhaust that will match up with the 13b.. I believe you also need to use the crossmember or front cover? to ensure that the motor will drop right in.

 

ya, you will need a lot to get the EFI system working from a 13b in a 12a car, unless you are willing to find all the parts, remove the dash, swap the front harness, swap the engine harness, fuel pump, etc etc etc.. its easier to just get a carb setup from racingbeat or off the forums and use that on your 13b. you will still need a higher pressure fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and gauge.

as for the engine mount, the 12a one can be modified (search) basically you just have to heat it up and beat it to hell with a sledge hammer or something to flatten it out and drill it out so the engine sits a bit further backward. thats what i did for my 13b swap and it sits fine now. however you can also just buy a 13b engine mount or buy the racing beat one.

the swap can be done fairly easily, took me roughly two months to get mine going properly, but i wasted the first month trying to get the EFI to work, which just wasnt going to happen since my 13b engine harness was damaged and i was trying to work around the front harness with my own wiring.
