Will a electric dizzy fit straight onto 12a?

gday,
I want to upgrade to electric dizzy... can I do a clean swap with the current one?

And also can a worn out dizzy be a cause to loss of power when hot?

Cheers,
Heb

All 12A's 1980 and newer have electronic already. If you have a '79, there is some rewiring to do but the parts physically bolt in.

It's hard to say what is causing your problems... but if the car is so poorly maintained that the points dwell is out of whack, who knows what else is wrong...

80 should have an electronic dizzy, which means no points...

the '80 is SUPERIOR to the '81-85 garbage. The '80 had its ignitors mounted in a separate aluminum case hanging off of the left strut tower, where they get plenty of cooling air. The '81-85 use teeny tiny little ignitors mounted right to the distributor, which doesn't cool the electronics off very well because the distributor runs roughly the same temp as the rest of the engine (conducted heat). And the trailing ignitor always seems to go first... and where is the trailing ignitor located? Right there next to the alternator! (Don't think alternators get hot? Many modern cars have cooling ducts routed to them!)

I have an '80 distributor, and you can have it when you pry it from my cold, dead hands....

I have three '80 distributors. They're not currently in use, but I'm keeping them.

Hey peejay, you got me thinking about the differences between '80 and '81-'85 dizzies. The reluctor is the same on all '81-'85, but the '80 is shaped differently. The trailing also fires only part of the time. There has also been talk of cross-talk (cross-triggering) between L and T.

Are you saying the '80 dizzy is superior only because the ignitors are not mounted directly on the dizzy housing?

That's right.

The trailing not firing all the time is part of the emissions control system. Thermal reactor units require unburned HC's to stay "lit", so during situations where the chamber might burn completely enough to deplete HC's to feed the reactor, the trailing is shut off. Obviously this is not a concern for '81-up catalytic converter systems, so they run trailing full-time.

My emissions went up on the '80 when it was stock and I had an MSD installed. Not enough HC's feeding the reactor.
