The spare tire recess and the feed and return lines changed between S2 and S3. I think you can put a later tank in an 81-83 car but not an early tank into a later car 84-85. The 79-80 is completely different and will not interchange with later years.

New guy wanted a one word answer, so I gave him one. The S3 tank is taller / larger to accommodate a 15.5gal capacity vs. 13.x in the S2 and earlier. To accomplish this, Mazda went with a small donut emergency spare in the S3 (*1984/85) instead of the full size spare in earlier cars. This required a change to the rear spare tire well, shortening it to allow for the taller tank to fit. The later tank will not fit in an earlier body style car, as the tank is too tall.

This change for 84 model year and beyond S3 cars was due to customer feedback that they wanted more range in general, and was tied to the release of the -SE model in 1984, which had the more fuel thirsty 13b engine option.
