Wierd noise/ shimmy? when I drive

OK I have an 81 GSL (with all wheel disc) when I drive the beast it feels like the Rear Passenger tire is an oval (i.e. not round) basically the rear end rises and falls as i roll (more obvious at slow speeds but happens at all speeds) and there is a horrible grinding noise.

Before someone says it is the wheel/tire, I have rotated the wheels and it makes the noise even when the car is jacked up with no wheel on, and i turn the rotor by hand.

is it a warped rotor? Bad wheel bearings? Other? What should I try? help!

(it has new pads on all four corners with all those stupid spring clips in place)

Check the wheel bearing. Look for signs of oil leaking from the axle, if there is oil leaking, a good indication the bearing is bad on that side, although there is not always a leak when a bearing goes bad.

things to check:

shimmy:
tires - look for a seperated tread on the suspect tire (will look like a bulge on the tread) most noticable when turning the wheel.

check the axles for warpage. it's been known to happen and can cause a wobbling rear end.

noise:
check the axles and wheel bearings.

i suspect the wheel bearings are causing the noise and a seperated tire is causing the wobbling.

Quick Story,

Buddy calls me and says his Jeep doesn’t feel right (guys a total idiot about anything in general) so I agree to come over and help.

I drove behind him and it was so funny, his tire WARPED so badly that when he started to take off his car would raise up and down so bad that it would make the front tires hop. Everyone around him would swerve and fly past him like he was going to loose control.

I wish I had a camera back then...all for a warped tire.

i am definately suspecting the Wheel Berings, as like I said before the wheels and tires were rotated and the proble stays in the rear passenger side. (not to mention that it happens with no wheels and tires on as wel...just turning the rotor by hand...disc rotor that is)

Yep, it's a wheel bearing or the whole spindle.
