Widebody Project Pictures! *56k Warning*

Hey guys,
this is my widebody project car that I picked up a few days ago. I am swapping the interior from my GSL, as well as the hatchglass motor, exhaust, suspension etc etc....

Its going to be a pretty long term project, as you will see from the pictures but I think the final product will pay off. Im trying to turn this into a street/track unique looking monster eventually with a TII motor and aiming for about 400 hp. The biggest hurdle to overcome at this point with the car is going to be saving up for rims and tires. I don't mean to be a copycat, but the CCwheels that luiml73 has look like one of the best bang for your buck deals. I was thinking about getting 17x12 for the back, and instead of getting the all chrome model of rim I was thinking about getting the black with polished lip because I think it would look badass on a black car.

Yes, I know the car is extremely dirty, but that is because I haven't had a chance to clean it, and some parts of it are pretty frozen (spare tire frozen in like 3" of ice). The paint is pretty fresh, the car was someones project car which they had to abandon beacuse of going back to school. All the body work was apparently done professionally because the owners father owned a large body shop here in town.

The rust that is visable in the back of the car is because of the fact that the previous owner left it outside without the rear 2 windows in. Thankfully I have new bin surrounds (well from my other car, so not new) to take there place.

Ok here is the last set of pictures. One shows the glass sunroof going in, the temporary engine that will be going in and some of the aftermarket parts. Also there is a picture showing the much nicer dash that is getting swapped in. Also there is a picture of the limo tinted rear hatch glass going in.

There is a few parts of the car that still need to be painted, door jams, popup headlights, and the panel between the windshield wipers. Another problem I have is that the person who put the rear panels on did not change the position of the gas tank inlet. I don't know how im going to fix that one...

I have already started ripping out the maroon interior from the widebody and I still need to tear out the dash. This project is going to take along time, but with the money from my job at the local mazda dealership I should be able to complete the car in a couple of years. The interior of the widebody was sitting outside with all the parts stuffed in boxes inside of it just waiting to be reassembled.

The kit is wide, VERY WIDE, so wide that most aren't going to like it... Im going for a rotary powered monster, and its VERY rare around here you see a RX-7 yet alone a widebody RX-7 or a widebody at all. People think stock 7's are porsches, I wonder what there going to think this car is?

Honestly I think I paid a bit much for it, because the car would be useless to anyone except me (I have all the missing interior pieces and stuff). He sold the car to me for 1900 Canadian, although expensive it was REALLY worth it for me because the body shop I went to trying to get my car painted estimated a paint job for my other car as costing 4000-5000...

So instead of painting my old car im swapping everything over to this other car as a cheaper alternative. I looked into what it would cost to make a widebody like this and the prices are like this: body kit 1399, spoiler 300, then you need all the labour to mold everything in just so, then paint... This car was freshily painted just before it sat in order to ensure all the body work did not goto waste. Basically I am getting more bang for my buck (but there is lots of work included, which I don't mind and im actually really excited about)

Good luck, not a huge fan of widebodies myself, but its still great to see someone else undertaking such a project. I'm coming to the end of my 83 project car, total teardown, literally every nut and bolt, all the hardlines, glass, wiring harness, dash, steering, etc everything was off the car so I could fix rust etc. Its been just over 2 years and I'm putting the finishing touches on it now. That project of yours shouldnt take quite as long as mine given that its somewhat together, but figure at least a year, probably more for it. Good luck if you ever want any body work advise, or just help in general hit me up, i might be able to help.

if you're making a monster you better stiffen the chassis!

and if there's no engine, and no dash/interior (shortly) theres no better start than to WELD THE **** OUT OF THE SEAMS!

please! methink you'll like eet!

That is the same kit I have. The CP Racing one. I have the wing too, but it is sitting in the basement. I like the Mariah whaletail better.

Post a close up pic of the fuel filler opening.

Plan on making inner fender liners. I made them for the rear but haven't done the front ones yet. I was out driving in the slush one day and damn near couldn't get the doors open from all of the slush that packed in around the door hinges. If it had frozen, I'd be waiting til spring to get out of the car.

I agree with what was said earlier, since you have the whole thing apart already you might as well seam weld it, I did on mine.

thanks for the advice and comments everyone, one problem is I don't have access to a welder at this point or else I would seam weld it up. Tomorrow ill take a picture of the gas filler problem.

Ya the wing is a decent size, but I actually really like it, it seems to flow well with the body and it seems like it has been molded in properly so it looks good. Usually I laugh my *** off at spoilers, but this one seems tasteful to go along with the rest of the body work.

Trochoid, I don't ever plan on driving this car in the snow, but how hard were these fender liners to make? Do you have pictures? thanks, im sure ill have several questions for you along the way since the car is so similar to yours.

The rear liners are simple, I'm still chewing on how to make the front ones and still be able to unbolt the fenders.

Snow or not, the front tires throw a lot of crap up in there, and with the bottom of the front fenders on the backside the way they are, it throws crap all over the front of the rear fenders too. I've even concidered mud flaps or remolding the fenders to keep the rear fenders protected.

There is a widebody kit that I really love but I can't stand the rear fenders. I like these better. Any idea where I can get only these rear fenders instead of the whole kit?

If you are looking for the ones like Dan's or mine, I think VB is the only place that is carrying them now. CP Racing quit offering the kit.

VB only sells them as the full kit as far as I know. That's alot of money for only 2 rear fenders.

Haha this is kinda stupid, I just realized today that the door locks are shaved off, anyone have a recommendation for which lock poppers to get? Should I get the ones that VB has in there catalogue?

Project Knight Rider

Hey guys,
Heres a couple more pictures... I cleaned the exterior up a bit, it still needs a good waxing (as you can tell from the pictures). I also took a couple of pictures of the gas cap problem, the picture doesn't show the problem too well, but the gas cap does not fit in the whole, and im sure a nozzle from a pump at the gas station wouldn't work either...

On another note im currently ripping the dash and interior out and im like 95% done, so im looking forward to getting the nicer grey interior in. Also my friend thought up a name for this project: Project Knight Rider. Haha he chose this name because the cars exterior is going to be black, and I mean all black... Black paint, black bumpers, limo tinted hatch windows, im even considering smoking the tail lights for that **** the cops off effect which im sure is a horrible idea is such a wierd looking car...

Im going to go over literally everything on this car, because I have heard a couple rumors about the car and you can never be too careful. I am pretty sure at this point that there is a disconnected brake line, just haven't gotten under it to look yet. Thank god I know what im doing tackling a project like this, apparently others have bought this car before and just given up selling back to the original owner. But offiously these people weren't as obsessed with FB's as me, and I have all the parts just waiting to go in (except rims/tires and a 400hp powerplant).

Yeah, as I suspected, the didn't hook up the filler neck right. Take the neck and rubber hose off of the tank, mount the neck to the fender, then find a hose that will tie the neck to the tank.

Look under the glass fender, did they cut out the original fender at all?

The fender is trimmed down a whole bunch, I should take better pictures of that to... For the replacment rubber piece what did you use? Is there a certain size, or can you steal a similar shape and sized one from another car? I should probally just take it off and get something similar and just make it work huh?

I modified the the glass part of the filler, made it deeper and changed the angle, then stretched the oem rubber hose to mate up. I don't know if radiator hose would hold up to fuel or not, but what ever you use will need to be fuel rated, not for pressure, for deterioration.

Is it possible to do this modification of the hose without dropping the tank, or is there another way to get in at this area? Thanks a ton for the help.
