widebody poll

I've been looking at widebody kits for a while with a "form follows function" mantra. When I get the money to do a full restoration like Trochoid did, i'll need something a little bit wider to put down the power that i'm anticipating. I've already got my powertrain figured out, you'll just have to wait a few years so I can accumulate the parts and prep everything for the buildup to see what is going to happen under the hood.

Anyway, i'm definately going to need alot more rubber than the stock fenders will allow me to run, so i've been looking at widebody kits. I've settled on 3, two from Mariah and the iscracing.net kit. links are below. I'm looking at the GTU and GTO kits from Mariah.

http://www.mariahmotorsports.com/

go to:
1) exterior
2) 1st gen
3) wide body packages

Do the leg work and get the pics to show in the thread as opposed to sending folks off to run through the links themselves.

Who's got that kinda time at work?

the GTO is the widest of all 3, at 73.5 inches. The GTU is 70.5 inches, and i'm pretty sure that the iscracing.net kit is narrower than the GTU kit.

I know, i'm tempted to go with the GTO because it's the widest, but i'd also like some way of plumbing in brake ducts to I can cool my brakes when I track her. That's why i'm asking opinions

I just voted too! When you get your kit installed swing over to Bay City to show it off.

My preference is the ISC front and the rear that I have on mine. That being said, find the right wheels for the kit you choose. It's easier to find a body kit than it is a decent choice of wheels, unless you do the SE/FC suspension swap.

For mine, I need 9" rims in the front to fill the fenders and 10" in the back. As she said, so far I have come up a little short with the 7" and 9" ones I have now. I would like my front end to be just a tad narrower than it is, and I think mine is the widest one out there.

I'm looking at a FC 5 lug front suspension and a Granny's 9" rear with 300m axles and a 4.10 LSD. Trans will most likely be a T-56, as the FD trans is only good for ~500whp .

As far as a set of wheels, i'm thinking that some CCW classics will look nice, with a black center and polished lip. The color will be Spirit-R Titanium Grey.

And you have the iscracing.net kit on your car?

It's going to be a while, I have to stop spending so much damn money on stupid **** . before I do the whole kit, i'm going to do a buildup much like Trochoid's. It'll be after I get out of school, which will be in ~2.5 years.

My personal preference is the Mariah Mode 1 widebody kit, but since that wasn't an option I voted for the ICS, which was closest.

If you're just wanting to slap some flippin huge tires on there and call it good, then go with the GTO, it has the most room.

My kit is the old one CP Racing was selling. It is the same one that's in the Black Dragon catalogue. Fwiw, the TII tranny is a better choice than a 3rd gen one.

If you are not doing the install yourself, after you get bids, call me. I could use a winter project. Besides the REPU, the Z, more work on the widebody and the extra GSL I'm sitting on. lol

Sounds like your going the whole way with your car. How much are you looking at spending total?

Im pretty much doing a similar setup, im shooting for around 400whp though. It gets expensive REALLY fast...

I personally like the GTU and the GTO kits, but in my personal opinion the GTO kit is just too wide, so I chose the GTU kit.

You need to consider also that all the kits you listed are RACING body work, and might not be the optimum for heavy street-use. They are laid-up lite for racing, with performance 1st on the agenda, and then quality and looks...

Also the GTO kit is not a simple bolt-on affair... much work will be required to fab mounting-points and the such.

Just wanted to mention that.

Bern makes a good point I had forgotten about when I did my install. There was so much flex and uneveness on the tops of my fenders that I had to add 2 more layers of glass just to stiffen them up enough so they could be puttied and smoothed out.

trochoid, thanks for adding your experience here... a lot of people want these kits for the real cool look, but forget that this is RACING GLASS... and not really designed for street use. ICS, JAPCO, and several other manufacturers lay-up the glass extremely lite, and sacrifice thickness for all out performance. Mariah sells the GTU/GTO kits, but they also have a sport version of the Mariah MODE-1 kit that is laid-up lite specifically for racing. You can see some of these here:

http://www.mariahmotorsports.com/mot...ts_runoffs.htm

Just remember to consider this when you buy one of these kits. Ask the vendor when you buy, that way you won't be dissapointed when you get it.

I know that it'll get expensive very fast. Here is a breakdown of what I'm 95% set on doing.

body:
full bead blast
fix all rust
seam weld
cage
epoxy coat
truck bed liner on bottom
widebody kit
Spirit-R Titanium Grey

est.: 10-12k

suspension:
FC front subframe swap
coil overs
camber plates
big brake kit

est: 5-6k

fuel:
15 gallon cell
2 x Aeromotive A1000 pumps
-12 feed
-8 return
a/n fittings
1000 primaries
1680 secondaries

est: 3-4k

electtronics:
2 x MSD 6AL boxes
6 x MSD or Bosch coils
12mm wires
grounding kit
Haltec or PFC or whatever my tuner can tune with

est: 3.5k

Drivetrain:
Ford 9" from Granny's
4.10 LSD
forged axles
T-56 trans
custom bell housing
triple plate carbon clutch
lightweight flywheel
auto counterweight
custom driveshaft

est: 5-7k

cooling:
custom 3 pass aluminum radiator
2 x EARL's 34 row oil coolers w/ thermostats
lines

est: 3-4k

Turbo:
A-Spec tuning's:
GT42R
bb cartrage
1.00 a/r
102mm wheel
T6 frame
SS mani
jet-hot coating

est:5k

Engine:
street port
lightened and balanced rotating assembly by Racing Beat
GURU 2 piece e-shaft
GURU stud kit
big street port
hardened stationary gears
3 window race bearings
RA 2mm seals
viton coolant seals
20b cosmo clip

est: 10-15k

So all in all, there is 45k at the low end. It's going to be a long-term project to say the least. This is why i'm looking to fit the most rubber possible under her ***.
