?Why run a Thermostat?

To plug the bypass I use a rubber plug made for a freeze plug. I use the stock h20 temp gauge. The reason not to use would be to keep the engine cooler, mine always ran cool when I had no tstat?

ever notice how the stock thermostat has a small jiggle pin on the outer edge of t-stat? that is there to allow some coolant to go by while the t-stat is closed. Also, it regulates temp better. If you gut your t-stat, or use any other than factory t-stat, you overcool your housings, which can result in warpage. there is a t-stat for a reason.

GAH! No, it won't make the engine run too cold.

Guys, we have a BYPASS STYLE thermostat... if it's removed, the engine will never circulate the coolant to the rad, it will overheat and die. Now get your asses over to Felix' Toolbox and read what I just typed again. I'd assume Felix knows what he's talking about

Felix is correct. Your interpretation of Felix is wrong.

When the thermostat is closed, the bypass port recirculates the coolant.

When the thermostat opens, the spring loaded valve on the bottom of the thermostat closes the bypass port while the thermostat opens.

If you remove the thermostat completely without plugging the bypass port, the car will not get full cooling because some of the coolant will still go through the bypass port back to the engine instead of going out to the radiator.


The engine will tend to run cold at first but if you put significant stress on the engine, the shortcircuited coolant will cause it to run hot.

The only way I can support that is a 30 year rotary mechanic told me that when I told him I got my T-Stat at autozone. He said only buy factory T-stats for that reason (overcooling the housing) bc no one else has a jiggle pin in theirs.

I have got tstats from discount auto parts and the have the small bypass hole (jiggle pin). They have 2 temp tstats either 185 or the 195 or something close to that. I always get the cooler of the 2 . . .

So basically it seems like if you live in a warm climate and you dont mind a slow warm up it really doesnt matter if you use a tstsat or not? This is what I get from this thread and what I have already thought before I started this. I know from first hand experience it wont get hotter with no tstat and a plugged bypass hole in the h20 pump housing.
