why does my car take so long to warm up

The manuel says the car should warm up after 2 min of having the choke on at 2000 rpm. My car takes way longer then this, I can even drive around for a while, and it will not warm up until I get to where I am going. Also even in the summer on a hot day I have to start the car with the choke (unless I was driving the car a few minutes ago and it is still warm) What could the problem be?

Also I was driving my car today, after it was warm, and it was hesitating in the higer rmps. Could the carb be dirty? How should I clean it? (I have a new fuel filter so that is not the problem)

Thanks.

I know what you mean... I live about 15 minutes from work now, and it's all city driving, and my car will still be on-choke when I pull in the parking lot! I feel so bad, it used to be I immediately got on the highway and drove (gently at first) at 60-80mph for half an hour, and it'd be warmed up within 5 minutes.

Keep in mind that this is with an electric fan that only turns on when I say so! It'd probably be much worse with the stock clutch fan.

The only solution that I see is to take the car out every other night after work and give it a thorough cleaning-out on the highway. Just to make sure it's not all carboned up, you know. Plus I'm thinking about a little preventative MMO in the tank every now and then, about 4oz to a tankful.

BTW - I'm getting a stellar 9mpg driving all-city... this in a car that can get 25-28mpg on the highway... what gives? Oh well, at least it starts with no problems... and I get excellent heat for the final 100 yards before I get to work

you can get 25MPG highway?
sheet. I'm getting about 19MPG observed with mostly highway driving. I get a good solid 10-12MPG when it's all city. Whoo baby

She warms up okay tho. You guys might want to check yer thermostats, cuz for me, by the time I get to the 3rd light I usually have to stop at, the car's up in the "normal" range. (that's like 5 minutes of driving) then it gets nice and stable at 1/3 of the gauge by 5 minutes on the highway (at like 70MPH).

MMO in the gas tank saved my *** when I killed the battery and flooded the hell out of the car... so it's well worth it IMO

I wish I could get that kind of mileage. My '85 GSL also warms up quickly ( it is below freezing here) after about 5 mins I am getting warm air on my feet and cruising at 70 I get about 20 mpg on the cruise control but step on it a few times and the mileage drops quickly.

whoa! 9 mpg is pretty bad! i get around 14mpg(all stop and go) city, and just took a highway trip over the weekend. averaged about 27mpg highway.... hauling ***! granted, i've got a dellorto, they're known to do well on the highway. my old nikki got about the same mpg, maybe 1-2 mpg higher in city, 1-2 lower on highway. peejay, you sure you don't have a supercharger on there?:p

I have been getting around 20-25MPG in my 83. My car takes about 5-8 minutes to warm up with a 185 thermo and a clutch fan. I think the manual says that you need to warm up the car 2 minutes before you drive it, I dont think it means the car will be fully warmed up.

Well... I keep it in 3rd and 4th in the city, otherwise it bucks really badly when it's on choke and it's in a gear that keeps RPM below 2k. (brap brap brap kachunk kachunk KACHUNK!! ) Ah, the joys of a ported engine. Actually I can get it to idle smoothly, but A) that's no fun, and B) it generates less vacuum and is prone to stalling and off-idle bogs.

It warmed up today and the temps came right up to 180deg just like always, so the T-stat is working properly. I even had to kick the fan on while waiting in line at McGutbomb's.

Even when my temp guage reads "middle" or a little below it, the oil is probably still cold because it wanted to die on me today at a stop light. I had to pull the choke a little to keep it running even after the automatic position holder had released the magnet. I think its because I'm using 20W50. My water heats up quick, but the oil takes a long time. I shudder to think of when the temp around here gets even colder.

Hey now... I was able to get 23mpg in my ol' 429. (Small blocks are for wusses! Muahahahaha) 'Course in the winter, what with lots of idling and driving slowly and whatnot, I'd get around 2mpg.

I've got about 1 week of experience working on rotaries, so excuse my ignorance.. but in any normal car if it takes a long time to warm up, it's PROBABLY the thermostat sticking open. Check the thermostat.

man my bros 92 mustang gt convertible w/ full intake and exhaust still gets 25mpg even though the gt convertibles are the heaviest fox body stangs they made. hes also got a 72 ranchero project car with pj's fav engine, the 429. when we went to the jy and i got all the **** for my car, he got all the 5 lug conversion parts for 100 bucks, 2 passenger side ranger axles and drums, and 2 front calipers off a lincoln. how much would it be for me to convert to the bigger se brakes and also better bolt pattern, cause we've got like 3 sets of rims that are 4x4.5" sittin around my house that are all aluminum. a set of ponies on his car, a set on the side we got cheap, a set of thunderbird turbo coupe rims, and also some 10 holes. the ponies are actually pretty light so im wonderin if they would fit right.
