why 4 plugs?

Why does the 12a have 4 plugs, i thought they were single rotor engines?

Its two rotor, the rotors just have less displacement... Hence less power and torque.

THAT is a one rotor engine

bigjim, seriously, have you ever seen a rotary engine??? next i may hear the first cosmo had a 13b instead of a 10a. it has 2 rotors, four plugs, two leading (the bottom ones) and trailing(the top ones) hey, on 86+ cars, the ngk plugs for trailing had blue rings on them. mazda did this because blue=sky, meaning up or top. you have my permission to now scratch your ***** with a cheese grater.

There was no need to be rude, all you had to do was answer a simple question.

As punishment you should all be forced to give away your RX-7s.

Don't want to insult anybody, but how can you have 250 posts and don't know about 12A's???
Maybe a bit of history lesson is needed here?
(just a list of what comes up to me now, might miss out a few, feel free to add what I forgot)
10A: 2 rotor, about 1 liter (roughly)
12A: 2 rotor, about 1.2 liter (very roughly, Mazda has been a bit optimistic, more like 1.15l)
13A/13B: 2 rotor, 1.3 liter
20B: 3 rotor, 2.0 liter
R26B: 4 rotor, 2.6 liter, 4x3 spark plugs!
Renesis: basicly a re-enginered 13B (even says 13B on the housings)
(and then there are some experimental engines like 15A etc)
So Mazda never produced single rotor engined cars.
NSU did, the Wankel Spider was a single rotor engined car. NSU and Mercedes benz also build single spark plug / rotor engines. So the first Ro80's had 2 rotors and 2 plugs, later 4 plugs for two rotors.
Now, maybe he can stop asking really stupid questions.

The 10A was a single rotor.
The 12A was 1.145 liters.

You're right, Mazda never released a single rotor engine.

"In the early 1960s, during the initial development stage of the rotary engine, Mazda designed and investigated three types of rotary engines: those with two rotors, three rotors, and four rotors. The single-rotor version, prototypes of which were completed by NSU, could run smoothly at high speeds, but in the low speed range, it tended to be unstable, causing bibrations and lacking of torque. This was due to the fundamental characteristics of single-rotor engines, which had large torque fluctuations."

I think atkins had or has one ( single rotor) that they were developing for kit plane use I believe.

Racing Beat did some research aswell. They have a photo of single rotor engine in their catalog, it's a development for NASA or something.
But still, no Mazda cars had single rotor engines.
BTW: Hurley has built a single rotor engine too, I believe. They have put it into a RX-7.
