There is one thing for certain, they produce drag. Now IF they are set up properly and if you are driving fast enough and if the down force is balanced front to rear and if, etc., etc. then maybe you get some benefit at the ragged edge of the street driving envelope. So apart from the aethestics, which I'm not going to get into, they are drag generators unless you have some exceptional conditions and have gone to exceptional lengths to set it up. About the most you can usually get is a reduction in lift.
While I don't totally disagree with you, and yes, they are often added for appearance, calling them a drag chute is a bit extreme, thus my comment.

I am familiar with winged sprints. My step brother won 1st place for both Eagle raceway and I-80 for the season in the same year, then retired from sprints. Eagle is the fastest 1/3 mile dirt track in the country.

Both Steve's and my wing are old school and have been race proven to be effective. If you would care to pay for the wind tunnel time, I'd be happy to test my widebody with and without the wing. lol

Funny thing about wings. There are 2 different ones for the 2nd gens from the factory. The one that is a short little flat shelf has more down force than the fancy GTU wing that eveyone seems to want.
