Whos got pics of an S5 turbo in a 1st gen?

Does anyone have pics of an s5 turbo in a our cars? I know its been done countless of times but I cant seem to find any. I need to know how the hell you guys bolt it on w/out hitting the idler arm. I finally got my BNR stage 2 turbo(s5) in and it wont clear the idler arm even w/out my spacer.

Thanks, Ed

I don't know if the S5 stock exhaust manifold will clear the idler by the time you space it out to clear the intake. I opted for the S4 because you can tuck it in a little better.

Shoot that's right... Mine in on a s5 block too so I don't use a spacer, and mine fits fine it just took some finaggleing to get it in there.

Never mind guys, I'm a moron! Must be all the meds I'm on. I knew my doctor told me to stay in bed for a reason. LOL!
But for anyone else that might have this question in the future. Yes the S5 manifold and turbo does fit. Its tight but it will fit. Bolt the manifold first and then the turbo, but like mentioned in the above thread you cant space it out. So if youre project is to drop a complete TII motor then go for an S5 turbo but if youre using an N/A motor stick with the S4. I hope this helps!

Thanks, Ed

I'm using a 1/2" spacer on my S5 turbo install, and the clearance by the idler arm upper pivot is about 1/8". I've put an aluminum heat shield in between for the time being, but plan to swap to the MOOG idler arm soon. From looking at the pics, that unit should improve clearance considerably.

If anything I would think the MOOG arm would give you less room, its pretty damn big, nice piece though.

How did you ever get that thing bolted on with a 1/2 spacer?

Thanks, Ed

The clearance issue in my install is up at the top of the idler arm mount, where the big flat washer is located. It is very close to the back corner of the wastegate cover plate. I should really pull the car cover and snap a pic... The Moog unit sits lower, which should improve clearance. Here's a comparison pic of the Moog unit vs stock from another thread. Note the mount hole locations, do a comparison, and you'll see what I mean.

As for installation of the turbo, it pops in just fine if the manifold is bolted to the block first.

I picked up a bit of room by grinding some of the material off the idler arm.Nothing drastic mind you, just a little off of the most troublesome protrusions, and making the washers "D" shaped. It gave me enough room to install/remove the turbo, and to fit a small aluminum heat sheild to the idler arm.
Its no longer an issue since I went with the R&P steering setup, but for a few years,it worked fine.
