This whine after the car is shut off has been going on for a while and I didn't think much of it until the other day; I smelt raw gas. Keep in mind, it does it after driving hard and I've heard it a couple of times at a light. What causes that?

Also my gas tank must be under pressure because everytime I open the cap, it hisses really loudly. Is this normal?

I've done my fair share of searching and haven't found much on either topic. The search engine used on vBulletin has always friggin sucked, though.

 

The tank should not be pressurizing. Check the chracoal canister, as the tank vents thru it. There should be 2 hoses on the canister, and the smaller one is the tank vent. This nipple has a tiny orafice inside it, and they tend to plug easily.
I have had some success using a fine wire to clean this orifice on most, but I have encounter a couple that were plugged real bad, and I used an 1/8" drill bit to drill it out.
As for the whine and raw gas smell, it could be related to the tank pressurizing, and causing a fuel leak. Other than that, I don't what would be causing the noise.

 

That could be why I'm getting such horrible mileage too, huh? (Usually about 10MPG, stock with rat's nest, never above 4k RPM and never above 65mph :P)

 

Can't edit but I wanted to say your method worked like a friggin charm. Thanks a ton. Right before I drilled it out, it started to do it really loud at the signal light.
