Put them under the car........
Really, I usually put them right on the frame rail. There are some sections that are thicker than others, and line up well if you're putting all four wheels in the air.

place a piece of nice wide wood between the body and the jackstands, and undercoat it when you are finished with the project, especially if you live where the icey roads are salted.
