Setting timing Please Help!!

I set the timing on my new motor, It seems that I'm either of one tooth on the distributor one way or the other. The Chilton manual i have says line up the leading mark on the pulley (most clockwise mark) looking at motor from front of car. and it says that the leading spark plug is on the bottom. I can only get it to run good if i have the trailing plug timed so the leading mark is lined up. When its like this the trailing mark is lined up with the leading plug. please help me out someone. Is the Chilton wrong or am i just stupid?

If you're looking at the engine from the front of the car, the engine is turning clockwise, so the leading mark is the first one to pass the little pointer above the pulley. The leading mark should also be painted yellow, trailing should be blue.

You are using a timing light, correct?

Change your coil wires around and try the timing again.
