Where Credit Is Due, You'll Find Carl!

Hey Everyone,

Well, if you didn't already suspect it, Carl's not a good guy at all... He's a GREAT guy!

A while back I posted that I had snapped one of the bolts off my Air Pump when I went to rebuild my OMP. Carl messaged me and offered to hook me up with one, since I needed one to pass my safety check in the spring. Well the air pump arrived today and it's absolutely beautiful. The thing is so damn clean you could eat off of it, you'd never guess that it was for a car as old as mine - Definitely ups the value of my engine bay

And the best part - it didn't cost me a cent! That's right, this is a classic case of a forum member coming to the rescue of his fellow compadre and not expecting anything in return. He knew that I only needed it for getting my safety - for one day, and would then be removing it. He could have said "meh, let him borrow a local one or something, he only needs it for a day" , but he took some time, cleaned up one from his garage and shipped it off to Canuck-land for me.

He's definitely getting my carb rebuild! That kind of honest business ethic is rare. It's quite the community we have here and I'm glad to be a part of it. I'll try and post comparison pics if I can get my friend's digicam.

Go Carl !
Jon

Wow, thanks Jon! Truth is I didnt need it. And I wanted to mess around with polishing stuff so I figured why not. And while it was apart (I wanted to make sure it was ok inside after sitting for so long) I figured I bling it for ya a little. Did you know they have carbon seals in them? Its a vane pump with phenolic vanes and carbon side seals. 3 vanes, 6 carbon seals with leaf springs, just like our apex seals. Precision bearings throuought too. Real piece of engineering.

It is very nice to see this kind of post. It seems we all take forgranted the quality of people, the the accumulated knowlage of this forum. We all have a common intrest and passion and that is the RX7.

That was a very thoughtflul thing that you did carl...

Here are the pics of Carls pump and mine.

Look at the insane difference... Hard to believe that they're both the same age!

Here's the "top" view of both air pumps.. Well, "top" was relative to how I was taking the pictures!

Notice the broken bolt in the crappy looking one. I did that by accident when I rebuilt my OMP. I could have gotten a machine shop to drill it and helicoil it, then find a bigger bolt... but I didn't think it was worth the trouble, or the cash.

Here they are side by side.

That's so pretty I bet you were tempted to leave it on.

Carl and many others too numerous to list are very generous with time and help. That's what makes this a community of sorts rather than just a place to trade parts and stories.

yeah, the extra bling is very tempting...

but one of my cats is hollowed out anyway! Maybe I'll leave it on until I get an RB exhaust... Then again, maybe not I've already got the 3L220 belt to take the place of the stock airpump belt, so it'll become a nice little room ornament after the safety... at least until I either move to Ontario or they get e-tests here (there's talk of bringing it to the province in 2005-06, so I'll keep the air pump around just in case... I doubt they will though, costs too much)

I agree, Carl's the man!

I've had great experiences with people on here. KehoeAutomotive heard my plight about lack of AC in the Central California heat, and voluntarily sent me an AC Compressor that will actually hold a charge.

Good people on here, it's what makes this board what it is.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Now youll have to bling up the engine compartment even if you only leave the pump on for a day Jon!

I got another air pump story. New guy on mazspeed needed an airpump. So I email the guy. He has a 79 that he bought new, but has been in storage for like 15 years. He took it out to get it running for his 25th wedding anniversary (they got married in 79) when he found out the pump was seized. So a couple of emails later and the pump is on its way. He needs this thing like yesterday, so I fed ex it to him. He just gets this all done just in time.

Here's the deal, as I mentioned before at Mazspeed I bought the car new in '79, it's been mothballed for 15yrs. I also got married in '79 and I want to have the car on the road by our 25th anniv. which is on the 20th of this month. That's why I need to get the pump asap. I'm trying to get this all done on the QT so as to surprise my wife. So any way I can expedite it would be appreciated.

Next, apologies for taking so long to respond. It's been really hectic getting this done, and getting my work done too. I'm overnighting the check and seized core today, so you'll get it tomorrow and can work with it over the weekend. Good luck, it seems pretty tight to me.

I gottta tell you, I used the ATF as you recommended and turned it over many times without the coils hooked up to get it lubed up well. Hooked up the coils, turned it over 3 times and it fired up like it had been running just last week! :-)
You couldn't get the smiles off our faces with a putty knife! It was so sweet. I also had to replace the rear shocks and the lift cylinders for the hatch, which is why I took so long to get back, been very hectic,, but worth it!
You coulda knocked my wife over with a feather when I pulled up in the RX7 and honked the horn. :-) Had so much fun driving it around last night I had to wonder why I'd ever mothballed her in the first place.

And he sent me his old pump like I asked in case I could fix it, but I think its toast.
