Question Whens the best time to check the coolant?

Cold, or Hot? My coolant resivoir is almost empty, but the car never gets more than 1/4 of the way up the temp gauge. Should I add some anyways? Whats the best kind to use?

Thanks,
Matt

I just check when cold... then i fill to the max--in the radiator and the reservoir (till the full mark)

I just use Prestone... I don't need to worry much about it actually freezing cuz i live down south (though it may get pretty friggin cold...)

Hey Fullsmoke,
I will trade you places, it is -13 f here right now. The snot running out of my nose is freezing before it hits the ground.
I will be in Birmingham in July I will probably be wishing for the cold weather then.

lol, I wouldn't mind some snow

Last time it snowed down (enuf to do something with) was like 2 years ago... And since I live on a hill and the weather "predictors" suck at predicting weather down here, I was stuck on top of the hill with no way to get my car down... I REALLY wanted to go to an open parking lot and just let loose

You do have snow, right? *hoping*

This is what I'd do. Drain the old coolant out of your engine by pulling the "block" plug located at the drivers side center bottom of your engine. It looks like just a bolt or something. Then fill her back up with water and run it for a while to flush the system of all the gunk thats probably in there then drain again. Now fill the rad back up with 60% antifreze and 40% water. Run the engine with the rad cap off untill the water temp get's to normal then put the cap on. Now take the resivour off (slides up and off) and dump the sludge thats probably in there out and clean it, fill the resivour to the "full" mark with antifreze and you should be good to go for the cold MN winters we get up here.
