Question Wheel lock problem

I have an 85 gsl-se that runs great and is in excellent shape. However, it has sat in the back yard for nearly a year because my dumbass buddy lost the only key to it. (and if he was not my buddy, he would have lost some teeth too) Anyways, my problem is this:
The car runs great (we bypassed the ignition)
but I dont know how it drives because the steering wheel is locked up. Someone told me to consult a locksmith, but i want to know if there is something I can do to unlock the steering wheel, or to cheaply have another key made or ignition put in.
I truly appreciate the information

WAIT a second you went through all the trouble of jumping the wiring, and now you wanna remove the column lock all for the expense of a $3 key? That doesnt sound like a good plan... Take the path of least resistance

Take the ignition lock out and write the VIN number for the car and take to a locksmith. He can make you a key for a small fee...

Im not sure if the VIN will totally get you a key w/o the lock on an 85 model. I know new cars all you need is the VIN #. Might call the locksmith and tell him what year car it is and ask if he needs both the igntion switch and VIN, or just the VIN.

take the passenger side door lock out. Get the number off of it. Take that number to the mazda dealer. They will cut you a brand new key to fit your locks.

This is also a great idea if your key is worn out so bad that making a coipy of it would be a waste of time.

I know the dealers can get a key for newer cars with the vin, but did they do that back in '85?

Did the 85s have a different key for the doors and the hatch or was there just one key?

The key is the same for all the locks on 85's, and all first gen's for the matter. (I think).
