Should I buy this gsl-se?

It is an 85 gsl-se, greyish blue in colour

with

~10,000 miles on new motor
new transmission
new cluth components
new radiator
new battery
rebuilt fuel injection, cost ~$1,200
160,000 miles
owned by older guy, ~35 y.o.
It has a borla-type exhaust with THREE cat converters.Easily fixed *gut gut gut*
I checked all over the car, only rust that I could find was at the front, inside the sunroof well. A smallish spot, just starting to bubble.

He'll sell it to me for $2,500 Should I buy this?

To me it seems like a good deal, espically since it does have a new engine and tranny etc., As long as the rust isn't too bad, Did you check under the storage bin for rust?

I bought my 84 GSL with the IMSA body kit for 1,500 canadian... It has no rust but the guy wanted to unload it fast.

FOr the most part, the descision should be made based on what is wrong with the car (try and forget what is right with it) check for rust, engine wear, check brakes gas lines, drain a bit of oil and smell it, see if it's been changed regularly (mine wasn't payed for it when the engine blew) check rad hoses and such... be thorough.. don't become blinded by the beauty.

reach under all the wheel wells and check for rust too, if there is any there at all, be weary.

cheers'

uhhhhh, I think 2500.00 to high, but ,I agree with 4 oh 4, what does it need..( Ie: shocks , struts , tires??) how is the condition of the interior??,,,,should be pretty good for 2500.00. It is really hard to tell with out seeing the car too, so, 2500 may not be to bad. and by the way, I am offended by your comments "owned by older guy , 35 yrs old"...you just made me feel realllllllll old...thanks a lot......

Yeah you really must consider what you'll be getting. If he actually restored the cars drivetrain and you are only in it for $2500. You will do ok. Paint is cheaper than parts usually all the time. If it doesn't need paint then you really hit good.

Or you can wait for the $500 miracle car to appear.

I didn't think the SE model ever went below $2000 without major cost repairs like bad paint, body damage, dead engine. Seems fair priced to me. I paid $2800 for mine in 1996. It had 75,000 miles, and was technically salvaged, though you would never know it. I happily paid that price. At the time, I was 20 and $2800 seemed like a lot of money so I assume you are young for simply asking if $2500 is too much. It won't be long before you have a $25,000 car and you are laughing at your $2500 toys.

I wish I had bought 2 and parked one in a storage garage to skip my neglectful youth years of abuse.

heh... i just got my '84 gsl se for free. The guy had it for years as a parts car, but nothing much would fit his '81 rx7 so he pretty much gave it to me in exchange for doing soem repairs to his differential . Had to do a bunch of electrical work ,but it runs and drives really good.Has very little rust(none underneath it ), Needs a little bit of t.l.c in and out. What the heck are these cars actually worth fully restored? I was under the assumption they weren't worth much over $2000 in mint shape... lol

Cool Greybeard

Well, young whipper-snapper....

I'll tell yuh. An SE is WAY too much hoss for a Tenderfoot like yourself. You best stick to a hoss that you can handle....Say a 12A with two barrels of the carb plugged up. Even then you'll probably be hollerin' "Whoa Doggie!"
It's best that you pass on this "Old-Timer's phone and address to an experienced Cowboy like myself that knows how to spell "clutch......"
Heh, Heh, heh...

Seriously, just what are "new clutch componets," and "new transmission," and "rebuilt fuel injection?"
Does it, or does it not have a new clutch, and if not, why the new transmission? And since when does a "rebuild" on two fuel injectors cost $1,200 smackers? Ten thou on new engine? Is this a '85 13B new engine, or just any old 13B new engine....I'd be askin' to see some paperwork, or at least the name and whereabouts of the wrench-hand who did the work. Sounds like a lot of cost went into this car to be now wantin' to sell 'er....I'll bet he'd bite on a 2 grand offer.

Just food for thought...

Sagely scratchin' grey head under the Stetson.
Denny, that old guy in the abandoned corncrib....
