wheel bolt pattern swap...redrilling

We are now doing front hub and rear axle re-drilling from the 110mm bolt to the 114mm.

This will include both bolt patterns so we can swap back and fourth.
Pics coming soon..

It'd be cheaper and easier to do the swap. drums would need to be drilled too. you'd be screwed if you had to replace either in the future. not to mention if you ever resold the car, the next owner would be swayed against it. I know I would be if I had to redrill drums just to do a brake job.

Whichever hole set you're not currently using, is gonna get sort of rusted.

A friend of mine had a first-gen that apparently had re-drilled rotors. I never actually looked at them, though.

They wouldn't be useless if they had a RX-7 of their own now would it. LOL!

Right now I have a big bearing gsl axle, but because I swapped my front end to the FC I want to have the 4x114.3 in the rear as well. Could I just swap the shafts from an SE or are my options only to drill my current axles or swap the entire housing?

SE axles are a different length, don;t believe they can be swapped to the non-SE rear end. ReSpeed can get you new axles drilled in any pattern. Other option is to swap an entire SE rearend.

It was hard enough for me to find the GSL axle I have. It seems like such a waste to have to replace the whole thing just to change the bolt pattern. The Respeed shafts would be nice but pretty pricey. I'll probably end up just pulling my shafts and having them drilled.

I have a GSL-SE rear end in my GSL, I'd love to see the results of redrilling the front, as I've got a wack of 4x114 rims from some of my previous cars.....

That would be the most economical route. Being the tightass that I am, I should have thought of that. Keep in mind that with the length difference between the 2 types of rear axles, the wheel offset is also different. Since I've never had an SE, I don't know which way the offset is affected, i.e., whether the wheels will sit farther out or farther in. Hopefully all you'll need to do is add shims for the right offset, along with longer studs of lug bolts.

I would also suggest having the old holes welded in, being careful not to change the temper of the axle flange.

I'm going to have to run spacers as it is since my front is currently substantially wider than the rear, so offset is not a problem. I needed to replace my wheel bearings anyway so I might as well get it all done at once.

sorry for the long delay..still working on the most efficient tooling for the rear axle re-drilling .. but we now have the front tooling done.

Did notice that the 79-85 front hubs (non GSL-SE) are not as wide as the GSL-SE.
in other words GSL-SE wheels will hit the front shock when you redrill the front 12A hubs. The wheels tuck into the wheel wells.

Now on the positive side you can use wheels with less backspacing or deep dish on the fronts pics coming soon

Just my 2 cents... There is a guy down in Homestead,FL. that does something similar to this. I believe he uses gslse hubs/rear and just drilles a fifth hole. I seen an fb with this done but did not get a chance to see the actual finished product. The original 4 holes stay the same, just add the last hole. I think its 1 of the lopez brothers. not sure. Its a friend of a friend of a friend. lol

that seems like it would be unbalanced / uncircular.

It would be. 4 new holes need to be drilled to center the wheel on the hub for the rear. I do believe one can simply swap the front rotor for an SE one, not positive though. Might be something someone could test fit and post back the results.

Scott, thanks for the info. I was all set to put GSL-SE axles and brakes in my GSL housing. These are the axles you helped me take out. If they won't fit a GSL housing then I might as well sell them.
