Whats your opinions on White lettered wheels?

I got bored today.

Sat out polishing up my GSL. Ran out of stuff to clean on it, so I decided to paint the "Mazda Rx-7" fender emblems, since they were faded.

I was still bored after that, so I painted up the letters on one of the wheels, to see how I liked it.

I'm thinking of painting them all....or maybe just buying new tires, that come in white lettered versions.

What do you guys/girls think so far:

I liked it better without the white letters... white letters are more for camaros and trucks, btw those side skirts are from a 1st gen eclipse kit...if you didn't figure that out yet of course.

I think the white letteres look very sweet. its also kind of old school, and goes well with an oldschool car.

they only look goood when they're clean though.

yeah, I think it looks alright. I used to have white-lettering BFG Radial T/A's on my 7... I think they looked pretty cool personally.

Nope. I thought, for a second, maybe thats what they came from, since I vaguely remember a similar looking set of louvers on 1st gen Eclipses.

I looked up a few bodykits, and didnt find any Eclipse louver style kits, but I noticed that they have about 3" from the front of the door, to the wheel opening on each side.

There are about 10" in between the door and wheel opening on my Rx-7, and the kit is 1 piece front front wheel to back wheel.

You have any pics of that louver kit on an Eclipse though?

This is an easy one. White walls all the way, I think they fit the era. Like an early '80's Vette.

Originally 7s had the white lettering on the wheels. The paint job you did looks amazing when you first said that you painted the tires I thought to myself help us, but it looked really sharp. Personally they don't do anything for me I think it's because I've seen most 7s without the white lettering on the tires. Even on mine, the owner before me replaced the tires so all I've ever seen are the black Protenzas lol. It's yours though so do what you like.

Hey let's see some pictures of the emblem paint job. Some moron buffed mine out and wore off the silver color . I know that the replacements are cheap but I'm not up for replacing them if I've still got the emblems. Thought painting might be a good idea.

Sorry, but I think it looks absolutely horrid. First off, your car is much too busy to look at in the first place, and adding white letters to the tires (not wheels!) just adds even more distraction from the overall picture. Secondly, I do not think any first gen looks good with white lettered tires, especially my brother Gamble's brown ride pictured above (sorry bro! you can arm-wrestle me later for it). White letters point out a crappy tire - no decent performance (street) tire is offered with such an option. Painting the tires yourself guarantees that it will discolor, fade, and look like overall yuck as soon as you start driving the car.

Sorry, not trying to flame, but I am just appalled at the site, and had to voice my opinion. I'm sure there are plenty of things about my cars that other people don't agree with, and that's just fine! If YOU like it, then YOU do it...but I'd point and giggle if I saw it on the street. (oooooh look the FB doesn't know if it's a Civic/Ferrari (body kit), Supra (wing), or GTO (white lettered tires)!

EDIT: note that none of the above applies to Hoosier or similar slicks. Unless someone is just trying to copy that look...which is rice.

I don't think they do anything for the car because your car has a body kit and aftermarket wheels.

I like the stock 1st gen with the white lettering, but on your car the focal point is the rims and body. The white lettering will take away from that.

Who can notice your sweet seven when an...an.....an.... Accord with fender louvers, clear tails but stock everything else sits next to it?

White lettering= Classic car wide oval tires, or truck tires, not sports car tires. And before you call you seven a 'classic', stand back and look at that body kit again.

Just out of curiousity: WHat would happen if somebody hit your door and damaged one side of the body kit? If you don't know who made/makes it and where to get parts, would the insurance company have to pay for a COMPLETE new body kit?

I love raised white letters! But they're a bitch to find. I just replaced my tires and couldn't find any in the stock size. Ended up having to put black wall Yokohama's on... If you can find them - go for it!

Hehe

I love when you get an even amount of:

"Looks great man, I love it!"

and

"OMG, thats the stupidest crap ever!"

About it being "classic"......the car is from 1984, and, from what I have learned, so is the Bodykit. Hell, even the wing was available back then.

I've painted the lettering before on the 14" Yokohama wheels on my 71 MGB. I know they last for about a month. Thats why I said, I would purchase a set of tires with the raised white lettering.

If somebody were to "damage the bodykit"....well, I'd be screwed...lol.....since I don't even have insurance on the 7 yet. (D'oh!)

I'm sure everyone knows by now, I'm not just into the basic, stock Rx-7 look. I'm not into the stock ANYTHING look. That Accord, is mine too. You forgot to mention the, 75 hp adding mirror tint on it!. I have 17" white MR7 wheels for it, which I have taken off, and plan to eventually get on the Rx7 when I convert to a 114.3 x 4 pattern.

That MG convertible.....I got crazy one summer, and painted it like the Austin Power's Shaguar, and it was my daily driver! I've also stripper all the paint on that car, polished the metal, and clear coated it to a mirror finish, just to see if it would reflect sun in everyone's eyes.

I like having fun with my cars.

That's cool. Different strokes for different folks and all. I thought that Accord was yours too, but wasn't sure.
Personally, I don't believe in adding anything to a vehicle unless it increases said vehicle's driving performance (with the exceptions being basic traffic jam comfort like a/c, and a decent stereo- but not a thumper system- just decent sound). But nowdays I seem to be in a very very small minority.

I used to have Goodyear GS solid white letters on my black 83. Loved it!

Then I went to Goodyear GA outline white letter on my 88 TII and was disappointed.

My 85 will have solid white for sure!

I had the same problem when I got tires for my car, I couldnt decide. I think they look great, but only when nice clean and white like yours, and I knew mine wouldnt stay like that, so I didnt get them. Oh well. Maybe some other time .

Hey Gamble,
You aren't talking about mounting 235s or 215s on those 5.5" rims are you?

I like that car, and the tires, It puts an original sleek look to the rx-7, there are tonnes of classic looking RX-7s out there, but one like these is truly unique, and i commend you.
