Whats your gas mileage??

Seems like 20MPG + on the highway is a killer score!
When I got mine, the speedo was off calibration too. I really can't see above 24-25 being an accurate number. I ran mine 170 miles one day straight highway, and 170 back the next day. Made it all on one tank. On Fumes.

It's the same as driving in 4th gear with the stock 3.91, just like if you had an SA with a four speed trans. The 5-speed did not improve fuel economy, it just cut the revs down.
The trick to good fuel economy IMO is proper ignition timing, run no more than 2psi fuel pressure, and drive at a speed where the throttle is *just* against the secondaries. By that I mean, you should be able to feel the secondary throttle opening point as a step-up in resistance against the throttle pedal... use that like a throttle stop, drive against it but not through it. At least for me, the carb would run really lean but the velocity through the carb promoted good atomization so it would still ignite and burn well.
Really, any 12A should be able to get 24mpg with a header, aftermarket fuel pump, and ~2psi fuel pressure.

On my '85 with dual Weber DCD's and RB header back I got 19 on a drive to K.C. (3 hours) twice this spring. That includes the autocrossing that I drove down there for. I couldn't tell you in town since I only drive it to autocrosses and back. Back when I had a Mikuni on it and drove it daily I was getting about 15 in town.

Damn. Now I'm going to have to recheck my Mileage and make sure something's not F'd with the carb. 28 seems way to high. (I did tailgate a semi for about an hour ]

I consistently get about 400km/tank. Usually have a few liters left over when I fill it. I have a very heavy foot. Straight highway driving I can get closer to 700km. If I was concerned about getting good gas mileage I would have bought an 88 CRX.

82, 83, 88, 82 RX-7again!
I get around 24 on highway. 20 overall (city/highway combined - not much city to be fair). But I haven't driven it this year ;(
PS - when my first RX7 was 1 year old in 1983, it got close to 29 mpg... Highway. Don't expect much when driving city, these cars have a electromagnetic pulse the forces the pedal down and the RPM's up

Very true, unless you just have horribly weak compression. I had this, and a few other small mods, on a 85 GSL and I saw 20/25 consistently for months, and got as high as 27. I miss that set up. My SA gets no where near that. I wish it did. I would drive it a lot more.

Leaning out the mixture with the screw might give you a little, but off idle drivability may be compromised.
You can change the primary jets to smaller ones in hopes of better milage. I wouldn't want to do it without a wideband though. Leaner = hotter, hotter = rotary death.

My 85 GSL-SE, forever fully stock, was always 20-21mpg for mainly highway use (infrequent urban use). That from the day I drove it off the dealer lot in '85. So that has always been my baseline reference.
Maintaining that now has been a challenge and I get very strange and inconsistent results. Some of that could be the "early refueling cutoff issue" because I've been premixing lately. But if that were the case, some fills should appear to be abnormally high MPG and they aren't. I'm getting generally like 16mpg, sometimes better but never better than 20.
I just did a tune up so we'll see.
I recently got 10mpg on a 10 gallon fill. That's the worst I've gotten. I had spent a good deal of time idling or driving very slowly - less than 20 mph (I'm a wildlife photographer and was driving around a refuge all day, plus 50 miles highway to and from). But the engine was not idling day, just for maybe 2-3 hours or so-WAG. I've often done the same thing in my '91 Nissan Pathfinder SE (V6), which usually gets 20 mpg (but struggling to maintain that - needs a tune badly), and never seen unusually high gas consumption. Maybe the rotary is different in that regard? It's the first time I took the 7 to a refuge and otherwise just don't do that kind of long idling/low speed driving with it.
I went into all that because I think there were some comments in this thread talking about really high gas consumption while idling just like I was doing at that refuge.
This matters to me because my fuel level sender is bad, reading 5/8 - 3/4 on a full fill and often hitting E with about 5 gals left in the tank. As a result of all this when I hit E I might have 5 gal in the tank, or maybe only 2 or so. Between the inconsistent gas mileage, the bad fueld sender and maybe the early refueling cutoff problem I have no idea what's going on
Reminds me to start a thread on that sender...
