What's wrong with these pictures? Ignition

Hi all.
Looking at the FSM, I noticed my FB is missing the vacuum hoses to the vacuum units on the distributor. The rasts nest and other items that are not needed were removed on my fb, but I thing those hoses should be connected, right? Check out the pics. Now where on the carb should I run these hoses to? I have lots of open ports now as you can see on the pic.

Also, check out my coils. Does anyone know what the blue and white plugs corresponds to which coil? Trailing and leading? The coil closest to the headlight motor on my fb is the leading coil, when on the FSM that should be the trailing coil. Or does it matter? The wiring was done by the past owner and all of the wires are all electrical taped.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Trying to learn as much as I can about my RX7.
I want to do the 2ndgen coil, but want to make sure everything is how it should be.

Those vacuum fittings on the distributor should be connected to the second fitting from the left on that plate between the carb and the intake manifold, according to your pic. I believe thats how it goes anyway.

As for the coils, I don't have the coloured plugs on my car anymore, but look at the colour of the wires. I can't remember which ignitor is the leading on the distributor, but the coloured wire on the leading ignitor plug should lead to the + side of the leading coil. The other wire on the plug is black with a white stripe I believe, and this wire is the same on both leading and trailing ignitors, along with the wire that leads around the distributor to a bullet style plug on the other side., Basically, just find out which ignitor is the leading, and trace the wires by colour from there.

Yes, that one you have the arrow pointed to. Don't quote me on it, but I am fairly sure thats the right vacuum fitting.

I figured that I should just take off all that electrical tape and trace those wires. For peace of mind atleast. Plus I have to do it anyway once I get the 2nd gen coil. The fb has a problem staying on once I get it started. I think it's ignition related, plus once I get those vacuum hoses connected, i'm gonna probably have to set the timing and adjust idle on the nikki/sterling carb.

Cool, I will try it. I have nothing to loose. What get's to me is why didn't that person hook those vacuums up? Weird.
Guess I will keep on reading.

Thanks for your help!

Well, a lot of people don't understand the function of them. Although the car will run fine without them, it will run better with them. They simply allow the dizzy to adjust the timing slightly to give more torque when needed. Better power band, better gas mileage. I hope your not counting on a sudden cure to some issue that you are having, because that is probably not the cause. Still, better gas mileage can't hurt any. Good luck with your 7!

Better gas mileage? Now we are talkin! Hehe

Once I get the fb started, it runs fine, just once in a while it will just shut off on idle. Starts right up though. Trying to figure out why it does that. I think it's carb related, but i'm not touching it until I learn more about it. I was told sterling put in bigger jets, who knows. I can live with it for now.

I just want to make sure everything is how it should be for when I put in the 2nd gen coil. I was reading on setting the timing, and when reading about the adjustment of the vacuum unit for the trailing side, I instantly remembered that there are no vacuum hoses on my unit. The fb is a gas guzzler, so any type of better gas mileage is good news. Not that it matters cause i'm always flooring it. Hehe.

Thanks

Hehe, yeah the Sterling carbs are thirsty. But if you want performance like that you're going to pay for it. Worth every penny at the station for all that extra umph if you ask me. Happy flooring!

Welcome Kim;
You have the Coils Wired Correctly!
Trail= Front Blue Plugin =Neg
Blue Cap Screw =Pos

Lead=Rear White Plugin =Neg
Black Cap Screw=Pos

Correct on the Vacuum Pods, According to Pratches Tutorial Page #26

Tee 2- 5/32 Vacuum Hoses to 1- 5/32 hose to the 2nd from the left inlet.
Have Fun

Check your timing before connecting the Vacum to the dizzy. You will most likely need to adjust it after connecting the vacum.

That's great information. Thanks guys! I didn't think to check the timing before. I will do that before I get it all connected. Great idea!

sgieldon, Thanks for getting me that info. I feel better now!

I recommend not connecting the vac. advance. Just leave it disconnected and set your timing at 5 degrees advance, which is about 1/4 way towards the 2nd mark on your pulley.
I have doubts that vac. advance would improve gas milage.. It is not active above idle if I am not mistaken. Also, if you get the wrong port and hook direct to manifold vac. this WILL cause you problems at idle.
The ignitor on the front (facing the radiator) of the distributor is the leading ignitor.
Last time I messed with my coils I used the one towards the strut tower as leading, I believe... The wires from the ignitors should go on the - terminal. Thick wires should go on the + side of the coil.

Nice and clean engine bay, btw.. purty
