The vents are there to relieve the pressure in the cab so you don't hurt your ears when you close the doors. That is what I was told many years ago. ??

It's also where water drains out from the rear two holes around the sunroof. Try it yourself, pour a glass of water down one of them and see where it comes out... just make sure they're not clogged first!

Thats 1 thing for RX7s with sunroofs DO NOT let thwe sun roof drain get plugged or rear hatch drains..
Once in a while I will let the water hose run while I run a stretched out clothes hanger in there,
If the water builds up due to dirt, and or leaves...it will sit and the car will rust.

My bro's Pontiac Fiero has those vents on the quarter sails as well. the vents lead through the structure of the frame/body and through the interior at a time....its there to ventilate the car.

They're there the same reason all cars have 'em.
A) so you can close the doors easily, and
B) to circulate fresh air
My toyota has them (very obvious, right behind the driver's door, big square black vents), my '81 prelude has them almost in the same spot the RX7's are, and my mom's '95 Nissan Axxess has them, right behind the sliding doors.

The sunroof has four drains, two at either front windshield pillars, and two at the rear air vents. In all cases, the tubes are rubber. If the tubes block, and water sits in the sill, it'll not only get all scummy, but it'll eventually rust out the roof. A friend of mine with an '82 mustang has a similar sunroof configuration, and, because he didn't take care of it, is now looking at replacing most of his roof, including the front roof support pillars... so check em out fer God's sake!
